I took the babies to the doctor. Noah has middle ear infection in both ears, both have perforated and Ivy has middle ear infection in both ears with perforation in the left ear and pneumonia. The doctor thinks that she aspirated some vomit with her reflux and add that to the terribe virus that she has had...well, you know the rest.
We are home but she has not kept down any of her antibiotics, so if we don't get some into her we will have to go to hospital.
-
Oh Tiff you poor thing, and your poor bubbas, they must feel so terrible at the moment. I hope Ivy can start keeping something down so she doesn't need to go to hospital. Do they know how they get a middle ear infection? and what can they do for it?
you mustn't be getting much sleep at the moment are the girls able to help you out with other stuff. I'm thinking of you all and hope they can get better soon:hug:
-
Hey tiff, hop iv and noah get better... sucks at the dr thinking you were just neurotic... cant we be worried about our kids?? And what ever happened to mothers intuition?? Its still working as far as i can tell!! :)
racs, Anneliese lost 5g the day of her discharge, and i was so afraid they were not going to let me take her home... all the nurse said to me was "5g is half a pea. As long as there's weight gain after, its ok." And he had a big weight gain!! Go Ronan!!
-
Hi girls - just wanted to join into this group too - my bub is almost one and was born at 34weeks. She weighed 2170grams and was 44.5cms - due to a placenta abruption...very scary - nearly lost her!!!
Gee some of u girls have gone through a great deal...u are all absolutely amazing women- so strong. Ur bubs sound like they are little troopers - soldiering on.
I'm really fortunate that my DD Ella is up there with her milestone development, though only one tooth at this stage and she is still very tiny in comparison to other bubs. Not yet 7kg but our pead seems to think she's doing well.
Justone main concern - she's having major allergic reactions to dairy...whole body rashes, blistering, swelling of throat/eyes, diff breathing. Got a skin***** allergy test but not until end Sept (soooo frustrating!!! and scary when she has these reactions and we're not quite sure exactly what's setting them off...was in hosp last wk after trying her on soy cheese!!!???) - anyone else with similar probs with their babes?
Look forward to chatting more - :) Rae
-
Hello Iluvella,
Your little girl looks gorgeous in that pic! I read your de breif yesterday.... geez scarey stuff. Isn't it unbelievable how many things can change within seconds of a pg and like finger prints there are no two alike!
I think Carrie is on hols at the moment but she has a little girl Kyla born around the same time as your Ella.
where abouts are u from?
-
Hi Nic - i'm from Penrith, Western Sydney.
Yeah - my little Ella is an absolute cutie - so cheeky...makes me LMAO everyday. Could never imagine life without her precious little soul in it!!!! I'm sure u feel exactly the same way - Nixon looks adorable :)
-
cool. go the Panthers hey! my dad follows the panthers, im from syd originally but live in melbourne now.
Got some Pixie photos of Nixon done today, cant wait to c them! i got him smiling in a few of them and also took his clothes off and just nappy in a couple!
what hospital was Ella at when she was born?
-
Nepean Public - they were so fab....well they worked super efficiently to save me and bub when most babes don't survive our condition!!! i'll be forever grateful - and the NICU there was brilliant!
Hope ur pixi photos r great!!!
-
Tiff, I just wanted to say that if you are looking for a brilliant paed, then Dr Phil Buckner at Dudley is the best there is, I took Coby to him with all the reflux and other stuff that he has had wrong with him, and Dr Buckner was wonderful, very practical and will listen to you and not just dismiss you and your concerns. He actually takes on board what you are saying and believes that you know your baby best (as you do). He's in the phone book and is relatively easy to get in to so perhaps you could get a referral to him from your GP? I know its a long way for you to travel, but if he's going to offer you some solutions then perhaps its worth it??
I hope you are ok.....
-
Thanks Bel,
I actually have worked with him and he is lovely. I never knew where he went when he left Wyong. I will look him up, thanks.
-
Just wanted to let you know that Patrick is in hospital with bronchiolitis. He keeps de-sating so they are going to start him on oxygen soon.
-
oh Jess,
I'm so sorry to hear that.
I hope he gets well soon.
-
Oh Jess, hopefully he will make a speedy recovery now that he is having the best care for his bronchiolitis. Keep your chin up hun xxx
-
Fingers crossed over here jess - Xander had bronchiolitis at 6w and 11w, and i know how scary it is. He got thru it after a week in hospital. hugs to you guys :)
-
Thinking of Patrick at the moment Jess. Hope he recovers soon
-
Also thinking of ur little Patrick. i pray he'll have a speedy recovery and u'll have him back with u asap
-
Hi girls! Sorry I haven't posted for a while - I've been finding things a bit hectic with my return to work. Although I do still read and keep up with all your news even if I'm not posting myself...
Jess...I hope Patrick is doing ok. Wishing him a speedy recovery.
Tiff...how are your little bubbas doing? I can't believe that you weren't taken seriously at first. I hope they are recovering well. Is Ivy going ok with her antibiotics? How are you doing? Thank you for the beautiful messages that you left on Georgia's website. I was very touched.
Rae...hi and welcome! It's nice to have another mum to chat to in here. We haven't had any problems with the allergic reactions that you mentioned. I hope the testing can get it all sorted out for Ella, it must be very scary. My son Joshua was born in August also, so I will probably catch up with you in August buddies too...
Nic...you'll have to post some of your Pixie photos - they sound gorgeous!
Carrie...hope you are having a lovely time in Adelaide.
Hi to all the other mums...Kirsty, Louise, Bel, Simone, Rac...how are all of you and your little ones doing?
Josh is doing well, although he has had a dreadful time with teething over the past couple of weeks. His top two front teeth have been coming down and have been really bothering him. They are sitting just under the surface ready to cut through now, so hopefully he will be feeling better soon. He is going well with his crawling...he does a mixture of commando and hands and knees crawling now. He seems to have found his appetite too, which is great. For the first time in his life he is finishing bottles and he is really enjoying his solids too.
Hope you are all having a lovely weekend...
-
Hi Bec,
good to hear from you again. i hope Josh's teeth cut through soon so he can get on with being a happy bubba!
I just read Georgia's site, tears started as soon as i heard the song playing. Israel K, we played this song while signing the register @ our wedding. Its such a lovely version isn't it. i remember the first time i heard it at the end of a tv show then searched high and low to find out the artist and title because i just couldnt get it out of my head. I lit a candle for her too. Its such a lovely website in memory of her.
I'll scan the pixi photos when i get them.
-
Hi Bec,
Great to hear from you, glad to hear that Josh is going well with food and mobility! Sorry to hear he is having terrible trouble with those pesky teeth! How is work going?
That was my pleasure re; your beutiful Georgia's site. I cried so hard when I read her story, it sounded very much like Will's.
Noah is 100% better than this time, last week. He is smiley and screechy! Back to his usual self. (I've put some more pics of them both on the birth and beyond hyperlink site if you want to see). Ivygirl is still plodding along. I think she is doing ok and then she has a really bad day or night or both. We are off to the girls' paed in Sydney tomorrow and she is going to see Ivy and Noah for me. I trust her and she has known me and my family for ten years, so I hope she will be able to help. It's such a long way down, so I am hoping it will be worth it. Not much else to report at this end.
-
Went over to hospital today to see Patrick.I lasted 20 mins, before I burst into tears!
They put him on oxygen last night and the nasal prongs didn't work, so put a box over his head and pumped humidfied air into it.There is only one thing wrong with this, and that's the fact that noone can hold him and I can't BF him.
I was full on my left side last night so I expressed it of, but unfortunately my right side decided that when it was full, it was too tender to touch and now because of the virus I have, I now have Mastitis in my right side.
About 3 hours ago I started to get really cold and I just thought, that the virus was hitting me hard, but then I started hallucinating and I was delirious. Apparently I thought Patrick was next to me and then he had disappeared. I was literally screaming DH said.He finally got some nurofen into me and I feel a bit better now.
-
Oh jess, how awful this must be, i remember how scary it was, the box is awful, but it will get him better and help him alot more than the prongs will... He will be home in no time at all. You are all in our thoughts and prayers...
-
Nic...thanks so much for visting Georgia's site and for lighting a candle. :)
You too Bel...it is much appreciated. I hope all is well with you and Coby. I love his latest ticker pic. So cute!
Tiff...work is going ok. Although the night shifts are taking it out of me! I think I'm getting old! Love the new pics of Ivy and Noah. Do people tell you that Noah looks just like you? I can see you in both Ivy and Noah, but Noah moreso. He sounds like Josh - smiley and screechy! I hope the paed can help you out. If you're ever in Sydney again, I'd love to catch up - you'll have to let me know! I know what you mean about Georgia & William's story and pictures...very similar. I have to say I've always had a special soft spot for your little guy since I first heard his story as Georgia was actually due on 3/4/04 and there are so many parallels. I've actually been feeling a little shaken up over the last few days as a workmate lost her baby girl at 12 days old last week due to an undiagnosed heart condition. Brought back a lot of memories and made me think of your little guy too...
Jess...you poor chook, I would be in tears too. I'm glad to hear that you are feeling a bit better now. Take good care of yourself and let your family look after you too. Thinking of you and little Patrick...hope he is doing better soon...
-
Tiff, how did you go at the paed??
-
had Nixon weighed today. He is 3 months today
he was 4250g ( increase 260g in 10days)
length was 56.5cm (grown 1.5cm in 10days)
head 37.5cm (grown .5cm in 10days)
very happy with his growth as it seemed to be slowing down the last few times.
-
Tiff - How did the Paed appointment go? I know what it's like when they have a bad day/night and even both as we are going through that since last night.. heheh
Jess - I am so sorry to hear about little Patrick back in hospital.. There are alot of things going around at the moment and Ronan even had to go and have an RSV immunisation because the baby behind him contracted the virus the day after he left..
Nickers - That is fantastic news about Nixon! He is certainly growing rapidly now and his measurements are awesome..
Bec - I can't believe your doing night shift! How in the world are you coping? That is great about the crawling too..
Simone - How is everything going now that your little girl is at home?
Well Ronan is going well besides still having his night and day mixed up.. He has had a crappy day today and i didn't get to bed until 6.30am this morning.. He has all his appointments coming up so hopefully he passes with flying colours.. His measurements as of a week ago are:
Weight: 4439 (up 160 grams in 4 days)
Length: 53cms
Head: 38cms
He will be weighed in another couple of days and i am sure he will have passed the 4.5kg mark.. :D
-
Hi Racs!
good to hear from you, Ive just visited Ronans website I was wondering how he was doing since being at home. sounds like he is keeping you busy! but such a better busy then going to and from hospital.
what is RSV?
are you still breastfeeding Ronan?
Oh & Happy 4months Ronan!!
-
Yeah a much better busy only i don't sleep at night now! :crying: :p
RSV - Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most common cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia among infants and children under 1 year of age.
They ended up having 3 babies come down with the virus and they closed off the bay which Ronan was last in before coming home, so it looks like we were LUCKY he left when he did.. In regards to breastfeeding, naw the little man gets too frustrated and won't latch on (could be environmental) not sure so i have been continuing the expressing and occasionally formula feeding.. It was getting to the point where i was sooooo frustrated with him not wanting to breast that in reality it isn't worth it for both our sakes.. If he is looking for more food i try to put him on and when he does he's asleep in 2 mins.. hehehe
Happy 3 Months to Nixon TOO!
-
geez it sounds very lucky Ronan did leave when he did and didnt catch anything from other bubs.i heard broncholitis is goin around at the moment, my friends two boys 7months and 2yrs end up in hosp last week for a few days with it.
You have to try and learn to put yourself to sleep when Ronan sleeps if its in the day! otherwise u become a walking zombie! and i guess you are really getting to know him atill because as many times as u go into hosp you dont get to see their patterns until u r with them all the time.
how did u do the hand and feet thing in hosp? I tried doing it today with Nixon but just made a big mess!
-
Hey racs, Anneliese is doing great at home, im off to get her weighed tomorrow hopefully... she's now 5 1/2 weeks. How time flies... Hows your lil prince> Sounds like he escaped just in time. Xander has bronchiolitis and got out just in time. Which hospital was ronan in?
-
Happy 3 month Nixon and Happy 4 month Ronan!
Yeah, I'm still around. Patrick is still in hospital and still in the headbox but today I was allowed to hold him and feed him, so that felt good. The Paed came in this morning and told the nurses to turn his oxygen down to 25% so to me that sounds like great news. He was really unsettled all day until about 6.30 pm and then he fell asleep for two hours, woke up had another feed and went back to sleep. They have had to put an I.V. into his little foot because his hands couldn't take the cannula.
Rac- As Nic said try to have a sleep when he does, I know its hard but sometimes you just have to do it.
Everyone else, thankyou for all your well wishes.
-
Jess - I hope little Patrick is on the mend ... I worked in children's ward for 12 years and the little babes with brochiolitis always tore at my heart - seeing them struggling to breathe and so uncomfortable and their poor mums wanting to comfort /feed them but couldn't always when really unwell in the headbox etc.
hi Ladies - I have been reading the thread ... my boys were born at 35wks 4days .Thank fully not too prem. They only spent 3-4 days in NICU and have now been almost 2 weeks in SCN -thoguh very well and no problems with them. The only problem is midwives who keep changing feeding routines
I popped into ask about the Breastfeeding issue ... Samuel (my big boy @2.9 kg born) is taking some breastfeeds now but only in last 2 days really and still having bottle feeds overnight and tube feeds. My little Joel (2.1kg born) refuses the breast but drains a bottle under 10mins sometimes.
How did you go with establishing feeding especially BFing ?
Did anyone find a lactation consultant helpful ?
I have the double issue of wanting to tandem feed as soon as posible if I ever can - hard enough latching Samuel on by myself.
I do feel a little frustrated that the midwives though busy sometimes haven't really assisted me much with establishing BF... today I had two crying babies - was bottle feeding Joel and rocking Samuel the basinette at same time with my feet or patting Samuel ... at home I will have to get used to it I know.
I heard about the new vaccine ? RSV ... I am going to ask the Paed about it -not on PBS yet - does anyone know what age it can be given?
-
hmm
trish I had similar probs. Wish I had got more help from at lactation specialists- esp one with twin experience so that I didn't doubt myself so much. That is the reason that I ended up expressing most feeds, for fear that they wern't getting enough and doubting my supply. Speak to your local AMBA club rep to see if they know a good lactation person to work with you, or one of the midwives at the hospital. Make sure they have tadem experience. Have you got a good tadem feeding pillow like the taddy? The fact that they are different weights makes is so hard at the start to tadem as the pillow doesn't balance properly as the weight is not even. Definately an art to it.
It is possible, and you can do it!!!! Keep at it!!!
Good luck!!!!!!!!!
p.s. have you tried a nipple shield to see if that makes in easier for bubba to attach?
-
Hi Trish,
firstly congratulations on the birth of Samuel & Joel!
I would be speaking up to the MW there they really should try and help you feed them at the same time. A lactation consultant wouldnt do any harm either so ask them if they can arrange one for you.
i know it would be a lot different with twins but as odette suggested maybe trying a nipple sheild? When Nixon was born he didnt know how to suck, and when he started it was at a very slow pace, i found the nipple sheild helped him (shape wise) to stay on and continue sucking. But if Joel takes to the bottle ok maybe there is another reason?
i really think they should be helping you tandum feed so when you go home you can keep at it, because otherwise you'd end up feeding one, then the other and never get a break from feeding. do they ring you or anything when the feed times have been changed so you know when to or not to come in?
-
Hi Trish,
Firstly congrats on the birth of ur little treasures - they look adorable :confetti: and secondly, u sound like u r doing a champion job with ur twins!!!
My dd was born at 34wks and at first she'd get really tired feeding on the breast so i'd have to express and give her the bottle, which she coped with much better. I didn't want her to get too used to a bottle, cause the MW's said sometimes a bub finds it easier with a bottle teat than the nipple, and they saw i was concerned that she wouldn't want to go back to the breast - so they suggested a Chu chu brand teat (from chemists).
This teat was great cause it works like a nipple does, cause bub has to draw the milk out of it the same way they would out of a nipple, - it doesn't drip out with ease like some other teats. This worked for us and once she got a bit stronger she went onto alternate bottle/breast feeds and finally just onto the breast. Ella is still b/f today!!!
Don't know if that's going to be of any help at all - but in the long run do what makes u and bubs the happiest! Ur doing great :)
-
thanks ladies
Joel actually took a small b/f today for 10-15mins and I thought he sucked well but then he took a top of EBM 50mls - so either he is very hungry or I am doing (feeling) it wrong.
The Paed sore them and said if they feed well -home by end of the week. Both have tubes out now.
I have an appointment Friday for about 1hr with lactation consultant at Community health clinic and she said she will try to book me for a home visit next week. So fingers crossed.
Now just convincing them we go home tomorrow (when we get our new car  ) - and without having to room in. Did anyone else room in ?
I rang them this morning and came in early - they were busy transferring a sick 34wker via NETS - so the feeds overnight were late.
how is Patrick today ?
-
Patrick is starting to turn that corner and get better. I was able to feed him WITHOUT the nasal prongs today and his Sats stayed at 100% so that is a great confidence booster.
The doctors said on Sunday, they are pointing towards the middle of the week, so that is tomorrow! So, fingers crossed!!!
-
Hey trish, in regards the breat feeding, i used to call in the morn, and ask which feed would be the best to come in and get help with. Anneliese's nurse always had 3 bubs to care for, and the feed times were (example) 12, 12.30 and anneliese at 1.30. I would go in for the 1.30 feed, as i know she wasnt going to be busy. And i would always ask "Can i do a b/f at 1.30? generally they were happy to help. Or i would just go in, get her up and bf, then look really awkward (sp?) they'd end up coming over to help anyway!! HTH!
ANNELIESE IS 2.81kg!! the nurse wasnt sure how many pounds exactly but definately over 6... That means she's put on 400g in a week! The nurse couldnt believe it!! :) anyone know hows many lbs and oz?? :)
Hope ronans and patricks are going ok guys...
-
Simone i think its approx 6p 1oz or 6p 2oz.
I think its roughly 2.2pounds per kg.
wow what an amazing weight gain thats great!!
-
Simone -that's wonderful news about Anneliese's weight gain!!!!
Jess - i'm soooooooo happy for u that ur little Patrick is making great progress - i will continue to keep u guys in my thoughts
Trish - glad u've got an appoint with the lactation consult...hope that provides u with some more direction/answers with the b/f. It was great that Joel had 10-15mins feed today - u should feel positive about that, even if he needed that extra comp (top up) it's a great start!!!!! And yes - my DH and I roomed in.
i'm really thrilled to read that these new prem munchkins are making improvements - as slow as it must seem for u mums - u'll be amazed how quickly it'll all be behind u. Next minute u'll blink and realise ur baby is sbout to turn 1 (as mine is next month!!!!!!!). Take care girls - my thoughts are with u all :)
-
I didn't want to post last night as I was so disappointed! For the past 4 days we have ben told that Pat would be coming home either Wednesday or Thursday. Well we got up there yesterday to find his monitor had been taken off, so we thought he must be coming home...no dice! The doctor came in after me waiting 4 hrs to talk to her!She said he wasn't coming home because they wanted to start demand feeding him again...WTF! Can't I do that?
