WOW she is doing really well!!
Had Tristans check, got some excercises for his legs, hopefully they improve and we miss out on physio. He lost 40 grams and is now 5660 grams, but he did gain 0.5cms in height and is now 64cms.
He's the happiest little thing, always smiling away and giggling. He has also just started to roll, not very much but he can do it :D
Just keeping an eye on him for now :)

we are just plodding along. Nixon had an OT assessment and he has a "sensory processing disorder"
although i know what its about and wasnt a big surorise i am having trouble trying to realy what it actually is.
i still need to speak with the OT with questions etc to find out more but her report was 10pages long!
she said something about "dyspraxia" so i have ofcourse googled that, a lot of the signs and symptoms fits nixons description.
last speech session tomorrow until Feb next year,his speech is going really well we just need to do more practising esp now we wont be going for a while

When I explain Brendan's SID to others I tell them that basically the part of the brain that processes the signals from the body gets confused sometimes and doesnt process it properly or at all.
Hi ladies - DD is 4 months old... golly time flies!
I am starting to think about when DD starts on solids.... I am looking at doing BLS (Baby Lead Solids) but am interested in your stories of solids & your premmie bub...
Am I right in thinking that regardless of how I introduce solids that DD may take a bit long to take to them? (and that this can happen to any child - full term or premmie)... just trying to get as much info as I can... getting lots of questions so trying to be informed
Gosh 4 months! Although Tristan is nearly 6.5 months...
It really depends on the child. Some premmies suffer from oral adversion from being tubed.
Brendan didnt take to solids. At 16 months he was still on slush and wouldnt take any more than 1-2 meals a day. BUT he had some issues including a severe tongue-tie (corrected at 17 months).
Tristan is slowly taking to it. Once a day about 4-5 spoons (baby spoons lol) and thats about it. Slow and steady wins the race ;)
Thanks Sally - did Tristan or Brendan have their tongue thrust reflex for longer than their actual 6 months?
Tristan has only recently 'lost' his, so right on 6 months really.
Brendan had it until about a month after his TongueTie was fixed, about 18 months or so.
We waited until Charlie was 6 months corrected ( nearly 9 months old in 'real' time ) before starting him and he never looked back. Told by the paed and the maternal child health nurse to wait a bit before, as their guts are still quite immature and more in line with their corrected age.

( P.S. Charlie HATED the rice cereal but absolutely enjoyed pear, apple, sweet potato or pumpkin, just one or two teaspoons to start once a day and one at a time for 3-4 days. )
Just wanted to pop in and say "Hi!!" I didn't even know this thread existed until this moment so it seems I have a lot of catching up to do.
For a little background, DS came at 32+6, 8 weeks after DH walked out. Awesome. He spent 6 weeks in the hospital, only ventilated for the first 24 hours and CPAP'ed, but kept in because they wanted him to reach the magical 2kg (he was born at 1.36).
He's now 4 1/2 months (non-corrected), 4050 grams as of yesterday and grew almost 9cm in a month!! Basically totally formula fed now as my milk flow just wouldn't properly come in for any length of time despite 4 rounds of Domperidone and too much frickin expressing just to get a few MLs.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi and to let you know I'll be stalking from now on. I've been really crap at keeping up consistently with forums as far as posting is concerned - the whole suddenly being a single mum with immigration issues and no permanent housing for DS and I is kind of at the forefront of my brain at the moment - but I wanted to let you all know I'm here.

It is interesting that each Paed has a different opion ;) We tried at 6 months of age - actual, I don't tink she actually swallowed anything just looked at us with What on Earth is this stuff you are giving me!! But within a month or two she was off and it was then that she started putting on weight really well and didn't look back :D
I would be holding off until she starts making grabs at your food, and if you are thinking of the BLS, there is a great general thread there that has a wealth of information, and FWIW the WHO guidelines are still recommending that they don't "need" solids until they are past 6 months. I am definitely planning to do BLS next time, sticks of steamed vegies, florets of Brocholi etc, great textures for them to play with, feel and taste. At the start they may not each much it is more about the learning than how much they eat.

DD is 18 months today and lately she has cracked some pretty huge milestones!
She has so many teeth now that I can hardly find any gums, and the gaps that are left are causing her absolute grief at the moment, so will be happy when the crack through, I have to say that the WCH's special teething stuff is our lifesaver, instant relief!!
She can say her name 'Kita", there is a video on my FB if you have me as a friend, if not PM me :)
She started "walking" on Boxing Day, after all the family had left :lol: We are getting short runs of up to 20 steps, which is just adorable, another Video on my FB of the walking hehe. If you haven't seen any of my Woo Hoo thread she has Hypermobility which means she is too flexible at the hips and knees, if was picked up when she was about 12 months old and we have been taking her to physio every week, and it has just done wonders for her. She rolled at 13 months, Crawled at 15 1/2 months and pretty much Walking at 18 months!!! We were told that she wouldn't catch up and was delayed by 7 months at her 13 month assessment, but lots of effort by all involved has made a massive difference!!
She eats most things and is a pretty happy go lucky little girl.
She LOVES swimming and our new pool, pop her on the edge and she giggles and slides right in!
She has cracked 11 kg :o, not sure of her height though, but she is doing fabulously!

TK, I really feel it shouldnt be based on age, but more when bub is ready. If bub is ready at 6 months then so be it, if not then wait and keep trying, not forcing :)

Sally - I am the same in that I don't think solids should be based on age alone, I will try @ 6mths (actual age) and if she isn't ready then I will continue to try and she will let me know when she is ready he he

welcome BR- my son was born at 33+3 but a giant compared to your bub he was 2.296 and spent 4wks in hospital. it must have been very stressfull time for you on your own, do u have family here or are they all o/s?

bit of a back story,
Had PPROM at 35 weeks with DD2, she tried to come then, but i honestly believe the tablet they gave me to ease the contractions so i wouldnt have her in the ambulance stopped it.
was sent home from hospital 3 days later, 3 days after that DD2 was born at exactly 36 weeks.
She wieghed 3550gms and was 50cms long, so not the particularly small baby we were told to expect!!
DD2 was admitted to SCN for 24 hours because of her BSL but was roomed in with me the whole time.
I know she wasnt nearly as tiny or early as most of the babies in this thread, and is really a very well baby even now, we've had no feeding issues, and only a bout of thrush to mention, but i find myself struggling with her developmental side, it took us to almost 13 weeks to see a proper smile on her face, she still doesnt really coo all that much either, i know these things will come, my MCHN says its all because she was early.
its hard when i read my baby buddies thread and see the things they're up to, its even harder reading about the babies in belly buddies thread because izzy still isnt doing things that they're doing!
hoping to read along with u guys to put my mind at ease and have some ladies who really understand what its like
Hi hope no one minds me poking in here.
Sienna, Bella and Ruby were born at 33+6 and are now 4 weeks old. Girls are all doing well and the only hospital intervention they had were NGT when they were first born.
Sienna is now 3.3kg (2.4kg born), Bella is 2.5kg (1.9kg born) and Ruby is 2.4kg (1.7kg born). Im very proud of them, theyre doing so well.

Oh wow Rhyb - the girls are growing so nicely!!! You must be sooo happy, thats awesome progress!
Skybie - My DD was born at 31 wks, so I actually joined the baby buddies group of when she was actually due - so I could compare to those babies who are more or less in the same 'corrected' age bracket. But hey, don't leave us here (although I'm more of a lurker on this thread :redface:).
I totally understand how you've got to wait a bit longer for all the milestones to happen, and then when ppl ask about her - having to explain the whole 'corrected age' thing to them, to kind of explain why she isn't sitting, smiling etc as yet ;).
BR - Wow, 9cm's in one month!!! Thats amazing isn't it!! It sounds like he is growing beautifully! Great thing about having a prem though is we get extra time for Newborn cuddles :D.
Sorry Beema - how early was Kita born? I'm a bit out of the loop :redface:. Awesome milestones to reach though! You must be soooo proud!

:welcome: Skybie, I too joined the baby buddies thread of my Belly Buddies - due date, as I found I had very little in common with the Baby Buddies born at the same time as DD, and it was a bit depressing when they spoke of how big their bubba's were compared to Miss N, especially as she was a very slow gainer and even in my "corrected" Baby Buddies thread she was the smallest by quite a bit :o

Skybie, Sam was also a 36 week prem - but much smaller than your little girl! We had to spend 10 days in SCN and I still feel like a bit of a fraud here - especially as he has grown so big so quickly! However, I do know what you mean about the developmental side of things - it's hard to hear about other babies doing things so early compared to yours - even though Sam wasn't all that delayed, it was there a bit and it has made me VERY paranoid!
One thing that has helped me a great deal - a friend of mine had a little boy born at 35 weeks who is about four months older than Sam. It's been good to see that Sam has done things around the same time as Timmy - so I know he's keeping up with other boys who have faced the same challenges.
My birth story is in the de-brief section - it's not something I can face talking about too much at all, even now at 12 months on. :(

Izzy birth, although scary beacause of all the things they tld us could go wrong, and not dialating for 4 hours, was actually quite good, not my planned, perfect birth, but still good. Everything i wanted went out the window when we knew she was coming early, i didnt care how she came out or what condition i was in afterwards, i just wanted her to be born safe.

Hugs BR I am sorry to hear that Sam's birth continues to traumatise you, have you had a chance to debrief with someone face to face? Maybe time will heal and you will be able to celebrate what was a very special event, even though it wasn't what you had hoped for. Big squishy *HUGS* :comfort: And hun you are not a fraud at all being in here, Sam was born too early and it doesn't matter how prem your bub was, being the mother of a prem comes with it so many different emotions, and often the best people who can understand the emotions are other mum's of prems.

Welcome Skybie and to your DD2. I have done the same and have joined both the baby buddies from when she was born and from when she was due, I couldn't not share in my belly buddies babies growing... but DD is similar in that she isn't doing things that the bubs she was born around are doing and she is sometimes ahead or behind the babies due around her. I decided to not really pay attention to when she does things on a strict scale, I am still watching milestones but not in a huge panic if she hasn't 'achieved' something strictly to the MCHNs schedule. I agree - when I was told I had to be induced as my liver was failing I no longer 'cared' about a 'perfect birth' I just wanted my baby born safely. I did it without drugs because I felt guilty taking anything when it was my body that was failing us both and I realised a few weeks ago that a part of me felt like managing the labour pains was the only thing I could control.
Welcome Rhyb and Sienna, Bella and Ruby. You did a great job baking!! My DD was also 2.4kg born. You have every reason to be proud :hug:
Leesa - I agree, the corrected thing is starting to do my head in... I am not explaining it to everyone but I do expect my and DPs family to get it. Some do, some don't. The ECHNs and her Paed have been great but argh family sometimes... DPs family are famous for saying that I shouldn't correct her age because she chose her birthdate... um NO she didn't... I was induced because my liver was failing... if she needs that 6 weeks leeway then so be it... but now because she has discovered her hands and constantly has them in her mouth well yep that MUST mean she is teething... I know can be a sign but she hasn't had any other signs... she just found her hands and a place to put them LOL. Argh argh argh

BW - I remember seeing your BA when Sam was born but have not read your birth story. I will. I sometimes feel like a fraud when DD is bigger than some babies born FT before her but then in other ways she is a 'classic prem' as my fill-in ECHN said one week.

RE- baby buddies, I've joined the group for actual age. With Brendan I joined both, but then the corrected one faded out. So actual ages here. But it doesnt bother me in the slightest that term babies are bigger and doing more than Tristan or Brendan. They have both come so far.
Tristan has 6 month needles on Thurs and then next week he has his weighin, so hoping to have cracked that 6kg mark this time (3rd month lucky eh?) He was 5660 grams a week before his 1/2 year birthday hehe.
Brendan is waiting on an appointment with the ENT, we are slowly trudging through ear infections lol. He lost nearly a kg before Christmas with gastro and now he is lactose intolerant from it. New Year and time to get back into the therapies (we took a break over Christmas at my request)

Congratulations Rhyb on your beautiful girls, have been following your story on here as it's not often you see triplets!
We joined the baby buddies group for our due date, but found because we had been away from all the girls ( even though we'd been with them all the way through on belly buddies ) we just didn't have enough in common to join in the discussion. They all left such beautiful messages when Charlie was born, but we were so out of touch for the next three months that when their babies were due, I was sooooo jealous about their 'perfect' births, getting to take their babies home from hospital straight away etc I just couldnt discuss mundane, everyday baby things with people I thought didn't get what we had been through for the last 11 weeks.
It is such a different journey through the NICU/Special Care nursery to a 'regular' delivery. Hopefully, fingers toes and ears crossed, we get to experience that this time.

A couple I started reading and though... hmm this sounds familar and I realised that I had already read them :)
BW, I hope that one day you may be able to celebrate your story in the general section, give it time hun, birthing your child is the biggest rollercoaster ride, throw in having a prem and it just adds in a few more loop to loops we wouldn't have been expecting.

Thanks, Beema. I have found that in many ways, being able to celebrate Sam's first birthday the way I wanted has helped me heal. Not fully, but a little bit. When I take a step back and remind myself that there was three years of waiting and longing before Sam turned up... after IVF and all the miscarriages I spent my entire pregnancy terrified I would wake up and it would all be a dream or that someone would take it all away. And then, when he was born, they did take him away. I think I got to hold him for less than a minute before he and DH were whisked away and then it just felt like I'd been forgotten... As much as you know in your head that things had to happen that way because Sam was premmie, it still doesn't change the fact that it was upsetting and horrible.
I can only imagine how much worse it must be for mothers of babies born even earlier.
Anyway, nasty headache so I'm going to grab my medications and head to bed and hope to sleep it off.

Maria (34.4weeks 2.050kg) was taken away from me as well, I know DH was with her but it was still traumatising. I had a retained placenta as well, my veins collapsed and had to be taken to theatre an hour after delivering her, no body told DH what was happening to me as I had started bleeding whilst he was in NBIC. He had authorised them to give her formula until my milk came in (like me he didn't know any better). They had given me an epidural so I could have the D&C and it was only supposed to last 3 hours, well 12 hours later I still couldn't feel my bum which mad it hard to get down to the unit and see maria. They did give me a picture of Maria up in the ward, and they did push me past her after I left recovery but I couldn't see much. Up in the ward I was in a room on my own, no nurses really came near me, I had no idea what I was meant to do, no one told me I had to express until about 8 hours after she was born, and then I had the MW from hell who just grabbed my boob and squeezed.
With Sofia (34.6 weeks 1.800kg) I was much more prepared, 1. I had been through it all before 2 years earlier. 2. I never really felt I would get to term even though I was going through the birth centre again and hoped to at least get to 37 weeks. I had a plan this time, the drip was put in as soon as I got to hospital (veins did collapse again), at lot of care was given to make sure the placenta came away quicker, but this time they gave me Sofia to hold whilst they were doing it. Even though she was tiny I was able to have skin to skin contact and she even tried to breastfeed at 15 minutes old - (she is still breastfeeding at 2 years old). She was much healthier than maria as was I, and would have been transferred to Level 1 care a week earlier if there had been beds. The nurses were really supportive, I knew most of them from when Maria was in there, I was a good milking cow and came out of hosspital with 5 litres of milk, I was able to give Maria a vial a day with her cow milk there was so much, Fia ended up using hardly any of it.
I also feel a bit of a fraud posting in here, the girls are fine, small but so are DH and myself, Maria does have some sensory issues and is very clingy until she is happy in a group, then is very outgoing.

hey all havent been round for ages...i have four kids 3 premmies taniesha (35wks 2.5kg)
Hunter (30+4 1.5kg) Serenity (32+3 1.5kg)........hunter was in hosp 4.5weeks and i ended up donating 21lt to the milk bank and serenity was in hosp 3.5 weeks and i donated almost 10 lt.......

Had Tristan weighed yesterday.... he is 7 months old and 5990 grams (13lb 3oz) he gained 250 gram this month. He is yet to double his birth weight... He is still breastfed and is on one-two solids per day (slowly upping the amount too) Brendan weighed more than Tristan at 7 months old...
I know that a gain is a gain, but Tristan is no where near gaining enough. His length and HC have followed their graph line since birth, his weight is dropping further and further off the bottom. He started off on the 25th %ile for real age! The CHN is being very lenient with Tristan because he looks healthy... but if he doesn't have a decent gain and start to pick up on his graph then he's likely to be labelled FTT... next weigh 19th Feb, when they will both be done.
I have aDr appt today too, being having some abdominal pain since Christmas eve, had an u/s a week ago and the Dr called me back in... found some things... Hopefully I can get something for the pain!

*hugs* Sal, you know what you are doing hun, I am sure he will pick up in time. A gain is a gain, don't feel bad about his size you have a happy bub and plenty of the wet nappies etc and they are what is important xxoo
18 months check up
We had it this morning along with the 18 month needle, she cried for the needle but ended up being more upset when I took away the crayons and pencils afterwards :lol:
She is HUGE!! :lol:
Chub: 11.5kg :o she is on the 50th%ile
Tallness: 77.5 (ok not that tall 10th%ile) :D
She is thinning out more now so will probably balance out her weight and height over the next few months.
Cough is ever present and Dr listened to the usual cracks and pops :roll: she did a lovely cough for him as well, eye's popped out of his head.. ah yes it was "normal" for her. He seemed to really just went "oh"... because I spoke to him in medical terms as to what it was, what was the possible cause it and the treatment we are following ;)
She has some Eczaema on the back of one of her legs, has only just appeared in the last few days, once again I had already started treating it with Dermaid, he said perfect :lol: Was no surprise when it came up as I had infantile eczaema and DH has dermotitis and I have psoriosis!
He asked about walking etc, explained the hypermobility and went through everything she had achieved in the last few months, thanks to weekly physio, so once again all going along nicely.
He was happy with her talking, she said "ta" when he gave her something and she asked him for some for "cheese" (teese), and happily sat there :)
Lucky for us it was bulk billed, as it wouldn't have been any point paying seeing as I seemed to have already been diagnosing and treating everything myself!!!
So IMHO dear little Miss is pretty darn "average" :D
