Wohoo!!!!! We're leaving in the morning
That's great! Congrats!
Oh hugs I'm sorry you are having a rough time :(
Prems are strange. It's hard to understand but bubs born at 32-34 weeks can often suck better and quicker than 35-36week bubs. We call them lazy 35weekers. It's all just too much for them :)
It's totally normal if that helps. But she will come together VERY quickly. Just remember your skin to skin time and let her have a play at the boob every feed you are there for! It's good for her and great for your supply!
She isn't 35 weeks anymore, she is 36+3 and I just got home from yet another NGT feed. I'm seeing premmie twins younger and lighter than her absolutely scoff down a bottle. Just doesn't make sense :(. And we only have one car and our brakes are failing... I have no idea how to get to hospital, it's a 40 minute walk each way so I guess that's what it will have to be if we can't get it fixed quickly.
Pull up a recliner and park yourself next to her crib and tell them you want try a suck feed every feed.. Hopefully they'll give you a bed. Are you juggling DD1 as well? Can DH stay with her so you can stay with DD2 round the clock?
Hugs. Had similar when DS2 was in hospital. There was a 31 weeker that suck fed more often than my 33+ weeker.
As for telling them you want to try suck feeding for each feed- go for it! I did with DS2. I stole the comfy chairs and parked it next to his crib. I was there all day most days.
It's harder if you need someone to take care of a toddler/older child (DS2 is my 3rd bub, so I had a 6yo and a 4yo as well)
Even at 36+3 she still isn't quite term yet.
Firstly congratulations. Sorry to hear of the troubles with feeding.
Our lil was born at 34 weeks & was tube fed for 3 weeks. We had good days & a lot of poor days. He came home with 4 bottle feeds & two breast.
I had days I pushed him & the next day he was too exhausted to do more than two. My biggest advice be baby led they get it in the end. The less I pushed the better he responded. Aim for the two tomorrow & take it each day at a time. You have a healthy baby who will come home.
Emerson is a booby monster, refuses a bottle & isn't loving solids but that is something thst will happen when he is ready.
So have a great sleep & relax don't worry about what other babies are doing. Yours is doing well :)
Maruschke - Does she wake at all? If yes then aim to try a suck feed every feed she's awake. If she's not awake at all, then I would try to wake for a suck feed every feed. The other thing to do is have lots of skin to skin and let her nuzzle. I know you are trying suck feeds with the bottle, but you never know, if booby is in her face she might want a little lick.. Hopefully she may even attach by herself when she's ready..
I just saw your FB. Thanks for reaching out to me when I know you definitely don't have it easy at the moment . The night nurses don't bother trying to wake her for a suck feed and it ticks me off... they just tube her, and sometimes her chart says "not disturbed" so they aren't even checking her nappies. Pardon my emotional outburst. But it's disappointing.
Hey if I can't do anything for my son's feeding problems I may as well try and help someone with theirs ;) We are in different circumstances, but we are both feeling the emotion of frustration. I, like you, am frustrated that my baby isn't doing what he should be doing with regards to feeding.Feeding is a basic instinct I wish our babies knew how to do it!
Maybe you should agree to them tubing her overnight but waking her for all feeds you are there for? It's a catch 22, you don't want her tired, but you have to try sometime!
Still nothing ... having visions of bringing her first birthday cake into SCN.
Hun, trust me she'll be home before then ;) seriously though I can feel the disappointment in your post. Remember she's still only 36wks.. Many babies aren't even born yet. I know it's hard though when babies younger are doing what she 'should' be able to do.. One day at a time
She will get there. Don't stress. I agree wake during the day but don't tire her either. Get her on or close to your breast while they tube her.
How are Jett and Nevada today???
Good.. He's had some booby today without screaming!! He's fast asleep now..
Woot! Go Jett :D. Glad to hear it, must be a huge relief .
OMG! I fed her a bottle today! Well... most of one. But hooray!
She is a VERY windy baby and she stopped about 40 mils into a 58 mil feed not because she is out of energy but because she won't suck when she has wind pain. But the nurses said she is also the most difficult child to burp and they've not been able to figure out how to get the gas out of her. She won't burp, just farts an hour or so later. Any ideas? I hope it isn't my BM, that would suck :(. What causes super bad wind?
Yay for feeding your bubba!! No experience with wind here, so no advice. Hope she takes more suck feeds :)
Your breastmilk is made for her. Whatever it is its not your breastmilk. Why would you think that?
Woo hoo!!!!! Go little girl!
Lol the wind stuff sounds all too familiar to me. (all of mine have been like that to start with).
Super bad wind (or hard to burp) are just more signs of a slightly immature gut. There are so many different positions for burping- also if you can get your DH to do the 'daddy jiggle' it can make a difference.
AFM- I'm writing you from my room in the Womens & Childrens hospital. Started having 'intense, irregular, tightenings' on Monday evening, which then continued all night & most of Monday morning. They stopped for a couple of hours (yay) but then started back up with a vengeance. Also was having some back pain & abdominal aches so the midwife told me come & get checked. Was 2cm dilated. :(
They now have me on a uterine relaxant & steroids for baby.
Looking at being here until at least Friday- depending on what happens in the mean time. So far tightenings have settled down, but who knows what could happen in the Nast short while.....
Hang in there Chrispe! Bake that bubba as long as you can. Sending all the "baking" vibes I have.
Just got back from the hospital. DD2 did a full suck feed for a nurse at 4 am, then at 10 am we thought we would tempt fate and wake her for another suck feed, which she did (my first full bottle, wahoo :D). We bought DD1 in to visit tonight and ummed and ahhed about waking her for another feed. Eventually we decided we would, but that at the first sign of tiring we would tube the remaining feed and not push her, but she finished the bottle! OMG three suck feeds today, up from two half feeds yesterday. I'm so nervous... if she does another one at her 10 pm feed, then we might room in friday. Otherwise, at this pace, we will room in Saturday or Sunday. I never thought the day would come. I'm faced with the reality of looking after her without all the medical help. Eeeks. I love it and scared by it at the same time. Also bloody scared of getting excited because she might be so tired tomorrow that she doesn't complete any suck feeds and I'm sick of false hope.
Sorry for the me post, just so much racing through my head, I needed to get it out. Dunno what to think or hope for.
Dont be sorry. Your being hopeful and realistic. She might be tired and not do it. Or she could do them. Or she may miss one but do the others. She makes the rules.
I know what you mean. It's scary when the day gets closer for you to take her home. I just did it and it's the scariest exciting moment.
How did you go? Did you enjoy rooming in? How many days did you stay in SCN?
I know how to have a SCN baby. Not sure how to have a premmie at home. O.o
Personally, I hate rooming in. I feel like I have to prove something. I also think if mums have to room in for 2 nights then dads should to for at least 1 night. They need to know what's happening. But I think I just don't like bubs in my room more then anything.
We were in scn for 3 weeks - born at 34+1 home at 37
I've only had premmies. To me they are the same as a newborn. Thier are only premmie in size and before 37 weeks to me
We did 2 nights, DH was able to stay.
What I couldn't understand was if I had a term baby that day you can leave after 4 hours but having an early baby you need to prove yourself
I don't see it as proving myself... because DD2 will go from 4 suck feeds in the nursery to 8 suck feeds with me. They need to make sure DD2 is coping with 8 suck feeds.
Today I checked her chart... she had done 2 bottles in a row and I gave her another, so 3 full suck feeds in a row all before midday. She just needs 2 days of 4 or more suck feeds then we can room in. Tantalisingly close. Grow bubba grow!
Chrispe how are you going hun? I hope everything has calmed down.
I should have mentioned. My dd had been doing all suck feeds for nearly 24 hrs from a bottle or me before I roomed in. Plus she was my second premmie. To me it is a weird policy
In hospital. Had a another labour scare this morning (after a nice calm day yesterday). Was hooked up to CTG all morning. No dilating, mild tightenings, so they gave me another dose of Nafenapin to calm the uterus. Also bub had a bit of a tacky cardia episode. Looks like I have an irritable uterus. Has been calm for the rest of today. Will be asking dr lots of questions tomorrow.
Will try to keep updating- but also try not to use up all my credit.
Crispe - Hope that bubba stays put for longer. Boo to irritable uterus :(
Maruschke - She sounds like she's doing great, I'm happy for you! Don't be scared, she's your baby! lol
How are you today Chrispe?
DD2 managed 5 bottles yesterday, 3 in a row before noon today, so we are likely rooming in tomorrow. Typically you room in after 2 consecutive days of 4+ bottle feeds... so she just needs to do 1 more bottle of the 4 remaining today.
I can't believe it O.o. After 18 months of TTC (and a year prior begging DH for another child), 2 miscarriages, a lap, 6 months on clomid, 3xIUI's, 2xIVF, a bleed scare at 30 weeks and a premmie at 35 weeks... tomorrow I get to be "mum". No idea how I will sleep tonight!
And... she is TERM! 37 weeks wahoo. And today she is back to her birth weight. <3 <3 <3
Woo hoo Marushcke!!! So exciting!
Quick update- trialed coming off the meds yesterday (drs are divided on whether to 'let nature go' or prevent until 35 weeks)
contractions started again last night, so back on meds today. Will be in here until Monday at least.
Chrispe - I hope your bubba stays in there til 35 weeks (or even better, 37!). Hope hospital isn't too boring for you.
AFM - leaving in 30 minutes to room in with my gorgeous little girl. She pulled out her NGT about midday yesterday and has been demand feeding with a bottle ever since. I'm gunna cry! So excited :D So in love :D.
Doctors have put me on medication that seems to have settled everything. Possibly going home tomorrow.
Thanks Maruschke! I hope everything goes smoothly with your 'rooming in' with DD2!
Has anyone else here been on a medication called Nifedipine?
I'm just curious if anyone has, what dose were you on and how long etc. I'm on 150mg per day (5 tablets) And so far the doc has said I'll probably be on them until 36-37 weeks, depending on if I get sideffects or start dilating.
