i remember a few years ago there was a website where you could go and see which brand of dummy was the safest. does anyone remember the website? or have any recommendations for safe dummys. i want to use a dummy on the lower price range but still safe. anyone know anything about happy baby brand?

I use the happy baby brand. very happy with it. I think a lot of speech therapists reccomend the 'cherry' style as it touches all the sides of the bubs mouth. I think choice did a test a few years ago but I am sure they have all changes since then but will still offer a guideline of what to look for.

Interesting. I thought that the "orthodontic style or even more so the style of the NUK dummies is what is widely recognised to be the least damaging.
You know what, the style of dummy might not be your choice. DD had a really strong sucking instinct. But HATED all dummies I tried on her. Just wanted my boob instead. Well, until I tried a NUK dummy (so only started using a dummy at 6 months of age). I know of others that hate the NUK style and much prefer the cherry style.

My advise would be to buy a few different ones and try them out to see what your bub takes to, if any. Don't buy up big on something your baby might not like. Same goes for bottle teats. I had to try so many different styles until DD actually took to one. It was really tough. I had trouble BFing in the beginning cause I had flat nipples (after 19 months of BFing they are anything but flat) and it was so frustrating when she rejected the bottle, too. Until my midwife bought me some other ones to try, which DD didn't mind.

yes, it was the choice one, thanks for that. here is what i found.. its from 2006 though so it could have changed by now.

An investigation by Choice magazine and the Australian Consumers Association has shown that six leading brands of baby's dummy do not meet safety standards, prompting calls from the Australian Government for an ACCC review of the national standard. The six brands that didn't meet the regulations include Nuk Silicone Soother, Nuk Latex Soother, Pigeon Silicone Pacifier, MAM Orthodontic Soother, Tommee Tippee Latex, Tommee Tippee Supersoft Comforter.

Heinz Baby Basics, Dymples, Happy Baby, Avent and one Tommee product passed the test.

I have used happy baby dummies with two kids and have been happy with them. They were recommended to me by my early childhood centre nurses as the best dummy to use if breastfeeding as the teat doesn't interfere with the sucking action required for sucking at the breast. I find the pack of 3 at Big W to be the cheapest option. I think it is $3.93 for a pack of 3.

Thumb? My first bub spat the dummy out at 4 months or so, moved to the thumb and that was that. And my second didn't like dummies at all, he sucks his fingers.

It's fantastic that you're looking into dummy safety! Don't be surprised if bub has other preferences though.

all my boys only liked the happy baby ones. I had all these fancy ones but nope. I gave them all dummies because they were finger/thumb suckers and mum always said you can throw away a dummy but not a thumb, plus we knew this girl who sucked her thumb until she was 7 and had horrible buck teeth because of it

I bought a baby safe dummy from Eco Child (online shop) it's called the Organic Pacifier by Natursutten. Supposed to be free from any harmful chemicals and it's moulded in one piece so dribble can't leak into any gaps, and it can't fall apart.

I use the happy baby brand as well. Molly didn't like the other ones and I tried several brands. They are cheap and I usually buy them from Big W. Sometimes the Chemist warehouse has the 3 pack on sale too and they offer different colors.

Yep, the cherry shape, not the orthodontic ones which apparently produce a shallow suck.

You'll see them in the pack of 3. So cheap too, which is good. I just get the plain ol white ones...no coloured ones for us. They are dearer. Lol.

thanks guys. i decided to buy a couple of the happy baby ones, because of the price and safety. found that some come with a sterilising pod that you put in the microwave. pretty cool. with my other DD it took about 4 months for her to get the hang of the dummy, she eventually took the orthodontic heinz baby basics one but they were very expensive and stopped making them in that shape eventually. there seems to be more cherry style ones around so gonna give that a go.

I only use the Heinz Baby Basic Cherry ones for DD1....she hates any other shape or dummy!
