Using walkie talkies as baby monitor

We've tried 2 baby monitors so far with no luck. Apparently we have too much static and interference in our house with wifi internet etc.

Someone told me that you can just buy a couple of walkie talkies with the baby mode function on it and they will work a lot better as you just pick a channel and voila. Apparently they also have alot longer range. Has anyone tried this? If so, what brand did you buy? I have no idea what to look for and am not keen to keep spending money on monitors that won't work.

I have never tried walkie talkies! I was looking at my DS's toy ones yesterday thinking, "Surely you could use these as baby monitors?", but then I realised you have to keep the "Talk" button pressed at all times in baby's room for that to work . I've not heard of ones that come with baby mode.

What brands of monitors have you tried? I have a Philips monitor and it is by far the best one I've tried when it comes to interference.

We did have a different monitor in the beginning but it didn't work due to all the interruptions.

My sister used their Uniden phone as a monitor and we use ours if friends kids sleep at our place while we have a dinner party, etc. The phone actually has a 'room monitor' setting but I'm not sure how long the battery would last if you used it overnight and if the phone rings it cuts out the monitor. However, you can switch the main base for the phone to 'Do not Disturb' so all calls go silently to your answering machine (so the monitor isnt interupted) and you can also switch the handset with the baby to silent.

I dont know what brand it is but we got a cheapy from toys r us, it only cost us $50 and it is perfect. We have wireless internet as well as nearly everyone in our street and we have never had any problems no interference or anything.

I've tried a Safety 1st one and recently got hold of a Babycom one off Gumtree, neither of them worked. Maybe I need to try Phillips or another big brand. I guess atleast if I buy a brandnew one and keep the receipt I can always get my money back whereas I can't from gumtree and I'll end up with a room full of monitors!! LOL thanks everyone

We have a FP one that has 10 channels on it so if one is interfering you can change it and you are right about getting it new, we went through around 4 before we stuck with this one and were able to just keep swapping them over until we found one that worked.
