I was very meticulous with it, washed and disinfected my hands first thing in the morning, put the saliva on the thing, had breakfast while it dried, checked after 10-20 minutes, washed the thing, went on with my day. It was actually hard to break the routine once I was pregnant You have to make sure your hands are clean and you haven't eaten anything in the past few hours. Some days, if I had a yuck feeling in my mouth, I swished water around my mouth and waited an hour before doing it, so as to have "clean" saliva.
