All the time for DD - and problem is she is hot bod and would live in singlets and shorts if she could, plus she has this thing going on right now where things feel funny, like if she has a long tee over a short tee and the top on top is too tight. Way frustrating. If we are going to a party or somewhere special I will give her a choice of 3 things.
I guess because I'd rather them be independent and really couldn't give two hoots what other people think about the state of my children, I generally don't even notice the dress state of other people's children. As long as their faces are (generally) clean and their teeth are clean, I'm good. The world isn't going to stop because of their dress sense.
I'm also aware (from my own childhood) of not being able to choose what I wore a lot and then fighting and rebelling as a teen....rather not go there. They're easily giuded now, so I hope that builds a good foundation.
They tend to choose better than DP or my mum so I let them choose what to wear most of the time. DD1 can pick a whole outfit and usually looks pretty groovy, DD2 just picks and item and I build the rest of her outfit around that.
i often think i need to get some stickers made up that say ''i dressed myself today'' just for those occations when dd decides to wear fairy wings, gum boots and her pjs to the shops.
^ So I *can* allow them to wear PJ's to the shops? I might do that in future hahaha... just let them add fairy wings and do the whole, 'Kids picked their clothes. What can you do?' when people stare hahhahaha :D
DH has been known to take the girls to Bunnings in singlets, undies and Dora sandals... I stay at home because that's one outfit I can't bear to be associated with in a public place!
I should add I dont have a problem with it... My dd3 often goes out in summer in a gorgeous dress and gum boots!!
Their fashion sense is hysterical at the best of times but the look of utter proudness on their faces is priceless and i have a fair few 21st pictures gathered up!!
When is a tutu with gumboots not appropriate is what I wanna know?!:

DS usually always picks his clothes. His wardrobe is pretty boring though, so he doesn't worry me. Whereas DD on the other hand had a gorgeous Burberry dress on for a party earlier in the year with gumboots on! They are her shoe of choice and wears them with gorgeous little clothes (which are usually off within minutes, as she hates clothes!) So really I don't mind what she wears as long as she has something on! Today we went to pick DS up from daycare and I fought with DD over putting a jumper on as it's freezing and raining. As soon as we walked through the doors I hear "Taa Daaaaa!" and she had taken her jumper off and was doing a little dance.... I have no hope!
Tee hee hee!! I have to know, was it just the jumper? Or was the "ta Daaa" and happy dance because the rest had come off too? DD at age 2 was such a little streaker, she hated clothes with a passion as well - you're far from alone on that one :):
I find if I let them dress themselves most of the time, then on the few occasions I like them to dress in special outfits they are much more malleable!
:rofl: CK. It was just the jumper this time but last week we went for a tour of a new daycare for both of them and she was having a meltdown the whole way around trying to get everything off!
My son (6yo) used to come up with the weirdest creations, it's like he wanted to wear every single colour at once, plus half his things were on backwards or inside out! He was so proud of dressing himself that i couldn't make him get changed. Nowadays he is much better at coordinating & looks pretty spunky most of the time.
My daughter (3yo) on the other hand has always been pretty good with this since starting to pick her clothes at 2yo. She had an obsession with her gumboots but could never walk properly in them, but since buying her a pair of pastel pink (her choice) boots she is much better now.
Most of the times I am only concerned with comfort. So I only get them to change if they will be too cold or if I know the shoes will hurt them. For some reason they seem to find the ones that are too big or too small no matter how often I try to get rid of them :rolleyes:
I just wish they were better at brushing their hair!
Yes, all the time. I often lay out clothes for DD to wear and if she isn't happy, she'll promptly tell me that she is not wearing that. She has also become picky - no jeans or trackies. I do put my foot down if we are going to a party - she has to wear something nicer like a dress or skirt and some decent shoes.
I always let my DD choose, have done since she was about two. But I taught her to match colours at least early on! I also offer suggestions on suitability (too hot, too cold, etc). But I care more about her controlling this small thing in her life than what strangers think. GL!

I absolutley head out with DD as she dressed herself - she is so proud of picking her own clothes and getting dressed that I just don't have the heart to change her. But I make sure I take photos so I can show her in a few years, LOL!!
DS has been dressing himself for some time. I'm sure it shows. If his pants have drawstrings, then he has to wear them backwards so he has 'tails'. He also generally preferes to wear his shirts back-to-front. Most of the time he will only wear his gum boots (must buy some more soon...) but if he wears other shoes he likes them on the wrong feet. And/or he wears 'odd shoes'.
I just let him go for it. One day I took him over to the local shops in nothing but pink undies. At least he wasn't naked.
