Hi there
I was wondering if anyone else has a 6 month old that is on 2 sleeps a day yet?
My lovely boy is giving me mixed signals at the end of the day. We get to 4 pm and he is happy enough, by but 5 pm is grizzly and by 6pm he is in bed.
The thing is, he only has 2 x 45 min naps 1 at about 9am and then lasts quite happily until 1pm where he will sleep until nearly 2 and then the run to 6pm.
I have done another nap thing at 4ish pm, but it takes some effort to get him to sleep and its only for 30 min of which he wakes pretty grouchy anyway.
At what age do they typically drop that last sleep?
I will be watching this as my 5 month old is doing the same thing. wakes up between 6am 7am first sleep is at 9am which he will only sleep 40 minutes, down again at 1pm, again only sleeps for 40 minutes.
The last week i cannot get him to have his 4.30 nap and is really grumpy at 6pm but i want to keep him up till 7pm.
Yeah I would try to resettle after 40 minutes, or get them up for an hour or something, and try them again. DD2 was doing this, and now has dropped to 2 sleeps a day, but each sleep is a good hour or so, which I'm happy with. She does turn into a little grizzle bug around 5pm though, so I put her on my back in a sling so I can still cook dinner and do stuff with the other two.
i can't remember exactly how old DD was when she dropped the third day sleep, but it was pretty early. I could never get her to go back to sleep once she woke up, she just liked her little catnaps! So don't stress if you can't get her back to sleep again. DD will now only have one day sleep, she started doing that a few weeks ago. Oh, and she now sleeps for up to 2 hours with just one sleep a day, even though when she was having more day sleeps she would be lucky to sleep for an hour!
I couldn't say I have DS2 in any set routine, but he sleeps through approx 11-12hrs overnight and tends to only have 2 x day sleeps of between 45mins-1hr. Occasionally he turns into a grizzle grump around 6pm, and if that happens I just put him to bed and then give him a dreamfeed (BF) just before I go to bed. He'll still sleep through till approx 6.30am-ish.
Would it be possible to gradually string the times of your DS's naps out a bit if he's content to stay awake a little longer? Say, 9.30-10am, then 1.30-2pm. Might help get him to 7pm, if that's what you're hoping.
From memory, DS1 was down to two sleeps around this age too. I agree with the others about resettling - if I can get DS2 back to sleep around that 40-odd-minute wakeup, he will sleep up to 2 hours. Generally though, once he's awake he's bright-eyed and bushy-tailed!
Thanks for all your replies. Unfortunately resettling is not an option for 2 reasons - I have a toddler already who wont wait for anything so I dont have the time to do it and then the said baby wakes up reasonably happy so it would be so hard to get back to sleep. Its fair to say that Ive gone back to 3 sleeps for the moment by using the pusher and rocking him that way to get him to sleep at 4pm for about 30-40 minutes and putting him to bed later (after 7pm). This, so far, has resulted in his night feed to move from 4:13am to 5am so far, but still wakes up at around 7am. His happy awake times are starting to stretch out to 3 hours in the morning and about the same for each other bracket. AndiE, Ive had probably the most similar situation as yours where I've struggled to get into a 'set' routine, which is what is affecting this whole game.
I might wait just a few more weeks and then see if he gets a bit stronger to last until 6pm from 2pm as Im preferring the 5am wake up over the 4:13am.
Decisions decisions! I've thought about bringing that last sleep of the day forward a bit to see if the baby gets that he has an option of stringing the 2 sleeps together in the afternoon, but haven't tried it as yet.....and not overly sure it would work.
