Our cats spend the majority of their time inside, but are slowly becoming outside cats. We still have the trays inside but the litter I'm using isn't hiding the smell very well. I was talking to a friend on the weekend who has an indoor cat and when I asked how he deals with the smell, he said he uses crystals and there is very little smell.
We've always used recycled paper but I've decided to try one that almost looks like sand / tiny wood chips although I'm concerned as it's a 'clumping' litter.
We tried the crystals when we first got the kittens home and they weren't interested at all.
They do spend a bit of time outside now (only when we're home), but don't tend do their business when they're in the yard.
Should I be using a clumping litter?
For those of you have inside / outside cats, do you still have a tray in place?
For those of you with inside cats, which litter do you use / reccommend to mask the smell?
My parents cat is an inside cat most of the day and goes out for a bit at night. They keep a tray for her in the laundry, although if she needs to go during the day she'll just stand by the back door until someone let's her out. She barely uses the litter but occasionally there are times where someone doesn't let her out in the morning and she'll use it. They use a clumping litter (I forget the brand it comes in a plastic carton, like a big milk one). When I lived at home she was still quite young so would use the tray quite often and I've never noticed the laundry smelling.
