    Hi Tasha,
If it is brown it is old blood. It is not unusual to have some spotting in pregnancy but it is not exactly normal either. Last time I was pregnant I think I was told that around 30% of women have some kind of spotting in the first trimester. I usually spot early in pregnancy.
You can also spot after an internal and after DTD.
It is more of a concern if the discharge turns bright red.
    Hope this helps.
    GIDGET.

Tasha - Gidget is right, brown blood is typically old blood. I had bleeding at around 5 weeks and it totally freaked me out but everything proved to be just fine. My nurse told me as long as it was not 'fire truck red' and not associated with cramping, that was positive. Keep a close eye on it and hopefully you will find it was only the one spurt.

Maybe give your OB a call just to get some reassurance, I know how terrifying this can be

    Tasha,
I would call your ob or dr and just check with them and maybe organise an ultrasound to put your mind at ease. Praying all will be okay!

I agree with the others. Bleeding can be normal even though it is so freaky and unnerving. I bled in both my pregnancies - first one resulted in m/c at 8 weeks and this one - well I am now 25 weeks so I've had both good and bad results.

I would definately see doc straight away because then you can put your mind at ease. I actually bled for about 3 weeks with this pregnancy - not heaps and not bright but enough to stress me completely. Everything was okay though so my fingers are crossed for you.

I went to the emergency department and they can do a simple internal check to see if your cervix is okay which could put your mind at ease. Otherwise they might take blood or do an u/s for a confirmation. Either way see someone so you don't freak (if you're like me!!)

Tasha - agree with Gidget. Brown blood is old blood - my ob said it could have been from DTD. Have had this in 2 pregnancies no problem. I have also had bright red blood a few days later (enough to fill a pad) but all was fine - just an odd occurrence...and the stats show that is is quite common to bleed and all be ok.

I am sure all is ok but if in doubt check with the doc. Hope all goes well - it will be.

I had brown blood around the same time as you (11.5 weeks). 3 others in my belly group had the same thing at the same time. All of us have continued to have healthy pregnancies so far. My GP said it's quite common to bleed around that time because of the change in function of the placenta (my bleed was from around the placenta - I had an ultrasound done to check).

    Hi Tasha

I just had my 10 week ultrasound last week and the obstetrician could actually see a small pool of blood sitting in my uterus (placenta?). He told me that this blood could come out or it may not so he told me not to be alarmed if I had about a tablespoon of brown blood discharged. I thought it was good of him to warn me.

I'd mention it to your obstetrician at your next visit (although it is a question they will probably ask you anyway) but most likely nothing to be worried about.

    Hi Tasha
As everyone else has said brown blood is old blood and OK if it is in small amounts
