Question Confirming pg with GP - what will happen at visit?

This might seem a strange request as I already have a toddler, but with my first pregnancy, I was seeing a fertility specialist - so the confirmation of the pg was via a blood test and ultrasound at around 3-4 weeks after conception. This time round DH and I have conceived all by ourselves (), so I'm confirming pg via GP - then seeking a referral to my Ob.

What I want to know ... is there a routine way to confirm a pg? For instance, can I expect to provide a urine sample once I get to the GP ... or will I just be sent off for a blood test. I ask because DS will be with me at the appt, which could make providing a urine sample kinda interesting ...

Also - does anyone know how the EDD is determined, when I have no idea of my cycle. I'm certain I conceived sometime during March - but am clueless as to when (I didn't get AF back after DS's birth!).

    Cheers, Andie

    hi andie,
I would say the gp would ask for a urine sample, then also do bloods, if they dont you can request it.
if you dont know date of conception they will usually book you in for a dating scan around est 6-8 wks.
    congratulations on your bfp!

Okay ... so potentially I could sterilise a bottle at home and take in a urine sample. Do you think that would be ok, or is it not the done thing anymore?

I just can't see myself peeing on demand in a doc surgery loo while my 13 month old DS patiently waits somewhere outside!

Times like this I wish I lived closer to my family .

    Congrats!!!

My GP made me do a urine sample and then wrote a referral for bloods to be done (which I still haven't had done - whoops!)

My doc asked me for a urine sample, but wasn't going to do bloods unless I wanted them done. He did say that if I was unsure of my cycle dates that he would give me a referral for a dating scan ini 4 weeks time (so that I would have been at least 6 weeks by then). I'm not sure about bringing in urine in a sterile bottle, I've never done that before. Perhaps put a brown paper bag in your handbag so you can hide the urine sample, LOL.

And... congrats for conceiving naturally! Wahooooooot!

EDIT: You can always say no if you don't want urine testing . Next time (if there is a next time) I am saying a big fat NO to bloods.

My GP usually doesn't get a urine sample on my first appointment (this is my third pg) & has just ordered bloods - although with my second baby I had to give a urine sample at the pathologist when I got my bloods done.

Depends on your GP really. Mostly they just take a quick history to check that you are not high risk, check your BP, possibly have a feel of your tummy and may talk to you about your prenatal care options.

The GP will ask you about your LMP because they always make a note of it, even if it isn't at all relevant to when you conceived. They will also write you a referral for an early dating scan if you think your LMP won't make for the right EDD (though they still usually work out an EDD based on LMP ... just for fun, I guess).

Congratulations on your BFP!!! Wishing you a very happy and healthy 9 months

ETA: Lots of posts while I was typing - Andie, my GP has containers that they give me to take home for urine samples (even if it is for the pathologist). Maybe you could ask if you could take one home and bring it back to either the doctor's office or the pathology lab when you go in to have your bloods done.

When I found out I was pregnant, I went to the doctor with my chart and told him that I'd had 3 +HPT's. He just said congratulations and wasn't going to do a test because he said the home ones are just as accurate as the ones at the GP and he looked at my chart and could tell from that as well, but we asked him to do a test just to make sure.

If you don't know when your LMP was, then you'll probably be booked in for a dating scan.

    Congratulations!!!

I also didn't have any tests done by me GP. I told her we were pregnant and she said 'congratulations'. Then she gave me the referral for my OB and some general info on how to look after myself. I did also get a referral for a dating scan because my last period had been really light.

Yep - GP made me pias and then sent me for bloods and made an appt for a US at 8wks.

This time round though I turned up at like 20 wks telling him I am UTD and he was "Yeah, I can see that".

An update for anyone wondering what happened:

The GP took my word for it, and told me to go for a dating scan. I'd had light bleeding 3 weeks ago (I thought it was the start of AF returning ). Apparently this isn't uncommon around 8wks pg, so she thought I may have been 10-11 wks!!!

Luckily I was able to be scanned this afternoon ... and the jellybean is 6w2d .

Now I've got to go back to the GP for a referal to my Ob. Lots of running around, but all for a good cause!

    Thanks for you replies earlier.

    Cheers, Andie

Congratulations on seeing JellyBean!!! Yay for being 6 weeks! Sounds like your light bleeding could have been implantation.

    Hope you have a H & H 9 months
