Hair colour during pregnancy- is it safe?

I have read mixed reports about this. I have been thinking I would wait until after the first trimester before having my hair coloured. At the same time I don't want to do anything risky. Many have told me it is fine, especially after the first trimester, but I just wanted to see what you ladies think.

I personally think its ok. i had mine done several times in my 2nd pregnancy

but if ur worried about it, u can always wait its not too long u have to wait really anyway..

i THINK.... that the only thing that could possible be bad about hair dye is the ammonia in it??

    Hi There,

I've been told to dodge it if you are bleaching but other than that after the first trimester you should be fine!!!

My hairdresser actually refuses to do anything other than semi's so no foils for me this summer

I did some net research on this when I was pregnant as I had some greys coming through.

Although it's thought to be safe the truth is it hasn't really been studied so it's really not known how safe it actually is.

You can also get some unexpected results with hair dye while you are pregnant. I've known a couple of women who ended up red when they usually were blonde.

I played it safe and put up with the greys. Did you see the pics of Nicole Kidman while she was pregnant - clearly showing grey hair towards the end.

i've just been down to my local TAFE hairdressing and had some foils done, after letting my hair grow out for eight weeks -had one foil coloured and the next left out - so i can more gradually let the natural grey come thru. i explained to the girls what i was trying to achieve, and they were great! i think it can't hurt to reduce the chemical load on your body - and coincidentally i m/c each time i caved and coloured my hair again. with the foils at least it doesn't really get on your skin.

the bonus was it cost me for the product only!

and good for Nicole - too many ppl carried on that she was too thin, look at the wrinkles now she stopped botox, etc. me, i get the opposite problem lol

I chose not to colour my hair during pregnancy. But a lot of people do say it is fine. This is usually only anecdotal tho, coz they say their kids turned out fine (so far anyway ) but yeah, I figured it was something I didn't HAVE to do (altho the regrowth was pretty horrid) and that I could wait.

I think too your skin can react differently during pregnancy, so that's another reason to avoid it in case your scalp reacts badly... which is why some people go for foils but not near the scalp.

Just do what you're comfortable with. If it worries you, then just wait and give yourself a great makeover once bub is born.. it'll freshen you up when you're feeling a bit worn out with bub too hehehe.

My hairdresser said it was ok to have foils as there is no scalp contact, so that was good enough for me, as dragonfly said. Also, I also had the info that satya had, which was that your hair can react differently to the dye when pregnant. So I suppose it is up to you what you decide to do. Good luck
