Question In two minds about my Dr...

    Hi,

I am writing because i dont know what to do about my GP. I normally do shared care with her, as she has a midwife who does her antematal apps, she just comes in checks the baby's heartrate and position and is off. She is normally really caring, understanding, etc, BUT she wont give me a dating scan form till the 17th. And the wait is long, she can run up to 2 hours late...

I have had 3 HCG bloodtests done, 2 from my GP and another from another GP as i was not happy about waiting a week to see if the HCG level had risen. He gave me a dating scan there and then to use in 4 weeks, i rang yesterday and have an app for thurs the 10th. If i go with this dr, its only for this scan and results, yellow card and then im going to do the midwife clinic, where you have one midwife throughout the whole pregnancy and birth plus they do some home visits after bubs is born..

The second dr sounds better, i am pretty sure i want to do the midwife program. Just want some opinions on if you think its the right thing to do..

    Thanks in advance

Well, i can only talk from my current UK NHS experience... I had a miscarriage immediately before falling PG with this bub, so my GP requested a dating scan for me in my hospital referral. NOrmally i would have a referral from him to an OB at the hospital, then see the Ob and have a scan and then see midwives from that Ob's hospital until i needed to see the Ob again for any reason. Any and all pregnancy care is handed off to the obs at the hospital and the GP has nothing to do with it. My first (and only) scan will be at 15weeks and one day - USELESS for dating! I have had no beta's done, and despite 4 previous miscarriages i have had NO early pregancy care except a urine dip and BP-check my GP did because he was concerned how long the hospital was taking.

Luckily for us we are able to afford an independant midwife and she, bless her, has already booked me into her care, and done all the routine things and lhad a listen to the heartbeat (which was amazing and lovely ) so i'm more dreading having to go to the hospital than anything. But still, any care i might have hoped for is sadly lacking and i'm SO glad i have the IM option we're taking.

So if i were you i'd go with the GP who gives you the best care. You could always transfer back later on if you feel you want to, but meantime you'll get more intensive early pregnancy care (which seems to be what you want) and feel better looked after.

Go the mw program hunny. I did it with dd, after going shared care with ds, and the mw program was the best thing I ever did

According to the World Health Organisation, the experts in normal pregnancy are MIDWIVES, GP's are't experts at anything, they're General Practitioners. They're good for prescriptions and referrals - no offense meant to GP's Go with the midwives!

thankyou for your replies ladies, I rang my midwife at the drs, and she said to go down at 1.30. So i headed on down and explained what i was thinking, and she said "you know what jen, you know so much about all of this, you could take over my job!" lol. She said what i was feeling was right, we NEED the dating scan before christmas, so here are the forms.
So i got my scan for the 17th. See my midwife again on the 24th. so in the end i got my own way, which was the right way. thanks for listening
