what to expect from a scan at 7.5 - 8 weeks?

I'm having an ultrasound in a couple of days, and wondering what to expect from it. I'll be between 7.5 and 8 weeks pregnant at the time (depending on whether you go on when I think I conceived or what they said at my other scan a couple of weeks ago).

I know that the heartbeat should be visible. What rate should it be at (what is the normal range?)

How long should be baby be at this point?

Any other measurements of things they'll be able to do?

I'd like to know what to expect so that I know what questions to ask the doctor, if any are needed.

    Any advice would be welcome!

I had a scan around 7 weeks with DD2, its was a vaginal scan, cant remember the HB but was pretty fast. Bub looks a bit like a jelly bean...a tiny little thing!

I dont know much more info sorry...all i wanted to know was there was a HB, baby was growing, an EDD and how many babies there were!

    Tenar,

Generally you will see a little blob with a tickering hearbeat (usuall quite fast) and most likely via a vaginal scan (they insert a dildo like thing - no pain just a little uncomfortable). They will generally look at the sac etc to make sure its all ok and in the right place. They will measure the little 'blob' to tell you how far in the pg you are and give you an EDD. There is not much else to really look for at this stage. Your next scan at 12-13wks will show you heaps more, you will actually see a little baby with fingers and toes and you will see him/her moving and waving his/her arms about.

Is there any reason why you are having a scan this early?

Hope it all goes well and you get to see your little bean with a nice and strong hearbeat!

At the scan I had at ~7w3d she didn't actually tell me the measurement in cm/mm, but I think it is on the print-out, although she did say it measured at 7w5d. She told me the heart rate was 164, which was good, but didn't tell me what the good range was.

She did a lot of moving around, said she was looking at my ovaries etc, but didn't really comment on what she saw as she went. She measured the gestational sac. I think most of the measurements were just taken down for her to then take into the Ob who was hidden away in an office somewhere. They weren't really passed on to me. She just came back and said it all looks good to him.

Hope all goes well at your scan

Thanks everyone, I like to know what to expect with these things.

I'm having the scan partly because I've been bleeding a little and I'm worried, so the doc thought it was a good idea, and partly because my husband is about to go away for a month.

That means he'll miss my 12 weeks scan and the first meeting with the ob. I want him to see something that he can connect to, so he feels the baby is real. Also he's going to be seeing his family overseas and of course we want to tell them about the baby, but not if anything looks to be wrong at this stage (it would be awful to tell them and then have something go wrong, somehow worse than if we lived in the same part of the planet). His Dad will be so happy (elderly guy, we are his hope for grandchildren, etc), but I would hate to get his hopes up for nothing.

    Hi Tenar,

I had an u/s at 7wks 4 days and all I saw was a little "bubble"!! I had bleeding too which is why they sent me for an u/s. The sonographer thought it was "too risky" to do an internal u/s as I had bleeding so they just did a "normal" one over my belly. They could see everything fine it just took a little longer as my little bubba was so teeny tiny!!

Let us know how you go

I had a vaginal scan done around 6+1/2weeks. There was only a tiny blob of a baby, sort of a jellybean shape and the egg sack which was still bigger than the baby at that stage. The measurements they took dated her as 2days older than what we knew she was but that is nothing unusual. The heart beat was FAST. around 165bpm or something I think but they didnt really say anything about it. I guess it was normal cause we didnt have to go back till 12weeks.

I was much the same as Kimbaz, I just wanted to know how many there were and that there was a heartbeat. I was satisfied with just seeing her on the screen!

Hope everything goes well for you!

i had one at 6.5 weeks with DS, it was external.
All i saw was a small line flashing, which it turned out was his heartbeat.

Im having one in 2-3 weeks for a dating scan and Im a bit nervous! I dont want to go to early and have them not able to detect a heartbeat!

Well I had the scan today and everything is good.

The baby is in the right position, there is only one (which is a relief - one is going to be hard enough, two would be harder). Baby measures 11.1mm long, and has a heartbeat of around 150 beats per minute (looking at the scan on the screen and calculating, I reckon it's more like 160).

We have a DVD of the ultrasound that my husband can take overseas to show his relatives, which is great too, as it will make it more real to them, we think.

Apparently it looks like I conceived 3-4 days later than I thought, though, so not quite as far along as I thought, not that it matters at all.

    We are delighted
