Numb pain in legs- like bad pins and needles..

I get a horror pain in both upper legs that feel like pins and needles but is really a burning pain that I can't walk with or stand up with. I have thought all along (and last preg) that it was sciatica but reading more I think that sciatica is more in the backside region and not the thighs? Any ideas?

could it be baby on a nerve? ive had a similar feeling on different part of body from hip down one leg before.

When I had siatica with DS4 I had a numb spot just above my knee and to the left a bit, and it was definately siatica as I saw a doctor. The pain and numbness went about 4-5 mths after I had him and started to lose some weight.

I had this when I was preg with DD - I went to the docs as my leg was totally numb ans she said it was bub sitting on a nerve.. it did go away but it is a terrible feeling!

The thing with it is that when preg with DD it lasted for a few months, a number of times a day towards the last few weeks and then went with the birth. Now with this preg it has started again at 25 weeks. So is each bub sitting on the same nerve for such a long time? I may have it for an hour one day then half an hour the next then 3 hours the following day.
I walked past a massage place today and spoke to the man there about sciatic pain massage and he felt a part in my lower leg and asked if it was painful and I said no and he said that is the pressure point for the sciatic nerve and if it didn't hurt then it wouldn't be sciatica.

Sounds like it could be "meralgia paresthetica" rather than sciatica. Sciatica implicates the sciatic nerve running down the back of the leg and meralgia paresthetica involves the femoral nerve running down the front. It can be common in pregnancy as the changing shape of your body and the position of the baby can affect this nerve.

I think you may be right there Jackrose. I have googled it and it sounds just like what I have, although I am a bit wary of self diagnosis via google/wikipedia! It sounds more like this than sciatica and my symptoms fit the bill and as I read there is no treatment other than cortisone injections in extreme non-preg related cases. Thanks all for your input!

I understand your wariness regarding self diagnosis, the internet can be a good friend of a very dangerous foe !

FWIW as soon as I read your OP, Femoral nerve entrapment was the first thing that popped into my head as I remember learning about it in my course... Pregnant women and girls who wear low cut jeans are susceptible to it (Another reason beside 'muffin tops' to avoid low cut jeans!!)

If you want some advice or a confirmation of your suspicions, a good physio, osteo or Chiro should be able to confirm and may be able to offer some advice about ways to reduce the pain. Do you have a trusted therapist?? If not, try getting a referral for one from a friend or from the ladies on here...
