Is it common practice to give antibiotics after c section?

I have heard alot of people talking about being given antibiotics soon after their c section. Is this common practice to administer them after c section?

I never had antibiotics. Seems like overkill unless there's a reason to think there *is* an infection... doesn't really do much for having a c/s if they think you are going to get one so therefor give them out JIC.

I havent heard this and have never had antibiotics and have had 3 c sections.

I was only given antibiotics after my 1st c-section because i developed a massive infection about a week after we came home from hospital, i never needed them after #2

I was given one dose of antibiotics via the IV fluids during my c/s in May 05, I was told it`s routinely given as a preventative to any infection in the spinal block site.

I had antibiotics, not sure how they were given, can't remember now. The day I told them I was going home, the midwife said she would have to check if the Dr still wanted me on them.
