    Unhappy Enlraged Fetal Kidney

    Hello

Found out that from ultrasounds it appears that our baby has an enlarged left kidney (28mm) which shows cystic areas that are well defined.

Does anyone have any advice as to what to expect? Can it be something the baby overcomes as it grows. I am currently 20.5 weeks.

    Thanks

    Lesley

Hi Lesley and welcome to BellyBelly. I have not personally had experience with that, but there have been a few women on here who have and their babies have had great outcomes. I'm sure one of them will pop in to share their experience with you.

Thanks Trillian, I hope so. I was so upset when I read the letter after picking up scans. I just hope it sorts itself out.

    Thanks again. x

    Lesley,
When we had our first scan at 12 weeks we were told that bump had one kidney mildly enlarged and that we would need another scan at 28 weeks. When we had our scan at 28 weeks the kidney that was mildly enlarged before was now the smaller of the two kidneys. They put in the report that both bumps kidneys were mildly enlarged at 28 weeks. Dr has not got any real concerns and says this is very common but we will have to have a pediatrician come see bump after he is born to access him and he may need a course of antibiotics soon after birth, and he will need to be checked regularly.

I was the same as you, freaking out and cried thinking I had done something that caused this problem. And when we did our antinatal class a couple of weeks ago the midwife said that in each group there is always at least one couple that has a baby with mildly enlarged kidneys and it very rarely becomes a problem, they just get checked out by the pediatrician. DH and I are certain that bump will be fine but I guess it is always in the back of your mind though.

Most of the time it does sort it self out as the baby grows and if it does need attention its not that bad either. So hang in there and try and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy, more than half way now!

Thanks for your reply I must say that I feel more calm now. I saw another post somewhere speak about antibiotics when baby is born so that makes me feel that there might be a chance it is not too problematic.

I just wondered if I had done anything to cause it and was crying so much last night sad that she might suffer or be at risk of something serious. She is so active and feel her kick all the time and everything else is fine with her so this was an unexpected shock so to speak.

However, I will see midwife this week and ask about it too and just hope that it is not serious. I was scared when I read about the cystic areas you see so would like more info on what it could be.

Also, I have diabetes INSIPIDUS which is a sodium related condition and not hereditary in my family and rarely hereditary but was wondering if it might be linked. I never had kidney problems though too much or too little sodium in your body can be quite serious although my sodium levels were fine.

Sorry to ramble and even contradict myself and thank you so much for your post. I will remain calm until further information and take it from there. It is only the left kidney that looks enlarged so fingers crossed nothing serious.

Thanks again (I hope this emoticon comes out as smiley face, apologies if it is something else!!)
