Both my mother and grandmother have Type 2 diabetes, plus my mother had GD with her 3rd pregnancy. So Ive always done the 2hr GTT in my pregnancies and passed no worries.
My midwife put the wrong label on my referral and I ended up having to do the 1hr GCT, even though I had fasted for 8hrs before hand. So I had some vegemite toast and then did the test.
She rang today and said I failed it has to be under 7.3 and I was 8.4 *wails* Now I not only have to do the 2hr test now but I am panicking that I could have GD (even though I have no other symptoms and bub isnt overly big) because I had not had anything sugary in over 12hrs before the test, only ate toast about 1/2 before I did it and obviously only had the glucose drink.
For those who've been in a similar situation (or who are trained in these things) do you think I have something to really worry about?
Would be so typical that my one awesome pregnancy ends up being the one I get GD with *sigh*
Anna with this bub my 1hr test came back at 9.4 and i had not eaten a thing in over 14 hours before it. I was stressed to the max. I was sent for the 2 hour test and it came back perfectly normal and under the right levels.
My mum also has type 2 diabetes. My sister had GD in all 3 of her pregnancies...i had it in none.
Anna, try not to stress about it. Chances are it will come back fine during the 2 hour test. If your levels were 8.4 after one hour, it's looking good that they will be below 8 after 2 hours which is the indicator they use. The fact that you had something to eat will also have changed the results as your next test (2hour) will be a fasting test. I failed mine and have GD, but my 3 levels throughout the test were 5.6, 10.1, 8.4. I've been dealing with it for 10weeks now and everything is fine.
Good luck...and don't get stressed because that pushes up your blood sugar level too!!!
Anna.. I had high blood sugar for in the first test for my first and second pregnancy and they both came back normal after the 2 hr... Fingers crossed for you!! Keep us posted!!
Anna
its is quite common to fail GCT and then be nothing wrong
I failed the GCT with my twins- didnt have to do the next test as i had them instead- oops
I also failed it this time with my singleton. Had to do the two hour test- its no biggie and passed it no probs. So maybe we just take a little longer than the recommended time for our sugar to return to normal after that 'yummy' drink!
I was pretty confident that all was going to be fine as well, before i did the second test - no signs or symptons of GD. My mum also has type 2 db as well. But all is good here
Just like Kimbaz, I was 9.4, I had cereal before I think, but they were concerned it was so high. Then had the 75g test and was fine. I think if you haven't had it before you should be fine, it's been the same for me last two pregnancies too.x xoo
i have had GD and now teeter on the edge of type 2 in normal every day life ( i have diabetes on both maternal and paternal sides ) i think you should be fine though that number will go down even further after 2 hrs and fasting as well but in saying that even if the 2 hr test comes back out of range GD does goes away soon as bub is here and is not to bad to manage in my experience to you it can be a scaary time not knowing
My midwife said the 1hr test is fairly inaccurate, and can be influenced by pretty much anything. I ate a peanut butter sandwich 90 minutes before the first test I failed it, but passed the GTT. Even if you have GD, its ok, it is generally controllled by diet and doesn't effect you or the bub if its kept under control. Try not to stress xxxx
Anna I have failed the GCT in the past and passed the GTT so don't worry. Don't forget too even though it was only a slice of toast, bread is a high reader with carbohydrates so would have pushed it up a bit.
My OB now sends me straight to the GTT and no GCT beforehand. I had a borderline pass this time round but because my fasting level at the start was 4.8 they are not looking too bad at the 7.2 at the end of the 2 hrs. On my glucometer at home the 2 hr reading came abck at 9 so I was freaking out ...
Even if by some chance you do end up with GD it is not bad at first as you only need to follow a stricter diet. It only gets to be a bother if the diet doens't work and you end up with high readings all the time and end up on insulin. To get that bad though is very very rare.

I failed the first test with DD2 and passed the 2nd test fine. My SIL who is a nurse said that its very easy to fail the 1st one and your levels are not that high.
I failed the first test - probably after a similar breakfast to yours - but passed the second one after fasting. I had 3 risk factors - family history, age (over 40) & overweight but still didn't have it. Try not to stress.
AnnaT- I fasted for my test one hour prior and was told it has to be a 2 hour fasting period, the path nurse did finger ***** prior just to see my levels at the time to make sure I could start the test then and not have to wait that extra hour, luckily I passed still, altho on the high side but the fact you ate only half hour prior to it is prolly why you failed.
Anna - no personal experience, I've always had to do the 2 hr test due to family history too but just wanted to agree with the others that I've heard it's quite common to fail the 1hr but pass the 2hr no worries. Good luck babe
Last time I failed my GCT as I ate something just prior to the test and it came back 8.1 however I passed the fasting GTT just fine. Because of this I went straight to the fasting GTT this time and again it was just fine.
i ahd the 2 hour test with Vy...i got 8.2 and was demeber as having GDD...I went and did the right thing...wrote down what I ate...did the finger *****ing every day...until my GD nurse said that I had to go onto insuline as my number weren't right and that I must be writing down the incorrect food's and my diet. The doctors and her told me Id have an 11 pound baby and Vy ended up being 7p 2oz andthen I didnt have it at all with mateauz? I would have thought I would have had it again with my 4th pg.
What im trying to say in my mumbo jumbo is that if you feel like it right...follow your gutt babe...dont be affraid to get the second test done....you watch you'll come out good as gold babe
