HCT levels nd U/S? Is this right?

    Hi All

I had an U/S today. First they did a standard over the belly job and couldn't see very much, so then they did a internal scan and saw a thickening endormetrium (sp?) which would indicate body preparing for pregnancy. They also saw a 1.8mm what they called "cyst" but not in a cyst kinda a way, they meant a like a clearing which could be the baby they explained. My ovaries both looked fine and they could not see any signs of ecotopic pregnancy, however they had not ruled this out at this stage.

I had another internal and was told my cervix looked healthy and normal. Urine confirmed pregnancy also. They also did blood HCG check which came back as 417. I have to go back in two days for another blood test.

The results of the scan indicated either early pregnancy or possible miscarriage.

HCT levels also indicated either v v early pregnancy or possible miscarriage and hence going back in 2 days for another test.

But also that these tests could also be a sign of ectopic and they won't know until second set of blood tests and more u/s.

I know it sounds silly but why would say all this bearing in mind I have told them LMP days etc. Having read everything else on here and other websites, it would be too early at 4 weeks for baby to be seen on u/s and HCG levels appear good. I'm confused why are they scaring me unnecessarily?

Help anyone with anything they can tell me to make sense of the above.

    Hi Ellana,

Can i ask why you're having a scan so early? I'm in the UK too and in my health board district it's normal to have the first scan towards the end of the first tri, mine was at 11 weeks, most are around 13 i think. And my ob didn't want to see me until he had the radiographers report on his desk telling him i was PG and all looked good. So why are you being scanned so early?

I would guess, not knowing why you're having the scan just now, that they can't tell you much from the scan, and instead of saying that are filling the silence by telling you what they can't tell you (i.e. that it's ectopic, dunno, that it's definitely PG, dunno). Scans at your stage of pregnancy tell one very little indeed. Basically your thickened endometrium COMBINED with the blood tests indicate pregnancy, but beyond that, there's nothing they can say. I'm sure it's because they're not used to seeing women so early in PG and don't want to make promises when, really, you know as much as them.

It's a shame they can't just say "Yup, looks like you're pregnant" but they probably feel YOU told THEM that and they should be giving you more. It's a shame though, as Thumper's daddy told him "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all".

Best of luck for the rest of this tri - at your next scan (12weeks ish?) they'll have a WHOLE LOT more to tell you.

Hi - At 4 weeks preg you def cant see bubs... you will see more at 12 week scan. I had a 'dating scan' at 8 weeks and all i could see was a little blur, I would not have seen a think except the sonographer pointed it out to me. At 8 weeks I was told they may or may not pick up the heartbeat - they did but this is quite early.
I would say not to worry, see what the blood tests say later in the week. The U/S cant tell you muchmore and they have just gone through what the options could possibly be, no indication that you have m/c or ectopic.
    Best of luck!

    Hi Ellana

At 4 weeks u/s wouldn't see bub...HcG levels are good for 4 weeks...
I get scanned early due to previous ruptured ectopic..but early for my clinic is 5.5 weeks and even then we're lucky to see a gest sac...HcG needs to double every couple of days until about 6 weeks so the next BT will give you a better idea of how things are going.

Good luck...I hope everything goes well xxx

    Ellana,
A heartbeat is detectable on u/s at about 6weeks and 5 days but sometimes this can be a little early. Many women who have fertility treatment or recurrent miscarriage will have an u/s at around 7 weeks. This will usually give a heartbeat.

Have you had some pain is that why they are doing such an earlyu/s? Wishing you luck on your journey...

I had a HB seen at 6w2d but that was with a different to normal probe (not internal, just stronger resolution). Was told that with most pgcies, can't see much untill after 8wks unless an internal is done and even then the lower limit is around 6wks. I have pics of my bubs at 6w2d and all you can really see is the gest sac, feotal pole, egg sac and a blur above it which was bubs. A little flicker in the blurr was the HB. 4wks is definitely too early to see anything really. Sorry honey

    Hi Guys

Thank you all soooo much for responding. I really appreciate it more then I can put into words.

The good news is that I went back for another blood test on wednesday as instructed and got the results back in a couple of hours (two days after the 417 reading) and it came back well over a 1000 so it's defo going the right way. They want me to go for a scan next week wednesday but have now said that all is looking well and this scan will be confirmation of that. Will still be too early to see anything but this has put my mind at rest no end.

PS: Not sure why my GP sent me for a scan so early, maybe cos I was pregnant in April but didn't go to term......whatever the reason, I'm happy that it looks like it's going the right way.
