Single Umbilical Artery or Two-Vessel Cord - Any Experiences?

Well, my husband and I just returned from our twenty-week ultrasound, and everything is going just fine. Our little girl is growing perfectly, and our sonographer could not detect any abnormalities in terms of bodily structure and organ functioning.

...However, she did say that it appears as though the umbilical is missing one artery. She was quick to assure me that this in no way guarantees problems in the baby either prior to or after birth, as it becomes significant really only in the event that abnormalities have been detected, and I am trying not to worry about this. We are going back for another scan in a month so that she can look at the kidneys and heart in greater detail, and I have been forbidden from googling the condition in the meantime.

I am curious as to whether any other mothers have had any experience with this - or whether you know of anyone who has gone on to have perfectly healthy babies with the presence of a two-vessel cord. I'm feeling quite calm about it as we don't have any other reasons to worry, but would be interested to know of similar circumstances.

I had a two vessel cord and I'm healthy.

It can be an indication of heart or kidney issues but more often than not, babes will be normal and healthy just like me.

Try not to worry in the meantime, I know it's hard though. All the best.

Thank you for that! I feel as though that might be the case with our baby, too, but it helps to hear other people's stories.

a friend of mine is pregnant at the moment and she has the two vessel umbilical cord. they told her not to worry and that one thing that could happen is the baby will be a little on the small side.

I had one when pregnant with DD. She is perfectly healthy. It also did not affect her weight as she was born over 9lb.

DD1 had a two vessel cord.

Ultrasound two days post birth to check size and shape of her kidneys confirmed all was well. As for her size 3.825 kg.
