Low Platelets....

With DD I had low platelets, with the first lot of bloods we were already under the normal range and were dropping throughout the pregnancy @ 32 weeks (delviery at 33 weeks) they were down to 112, and I knew that if they dropped to between 80-100, it would likely be only a GA if CS was required, and OB was planning an induction if they got too low.

I am hoping to see if they did a count when I was in delivery (can't remember if they even took blood ), as to how low they had gotten. As I know that when I had some "repair" work at 10weeks PN, and OB had to cut a stitch out, I bleed heavily for 15 minutes and she ended up having to put another stitch it re tested and they were still outside of the normal range (150-400)

But what I was wondering if you have had low platelets did you have them in subsequent pregnancies?

Also wondering if I should get my GP to order a BT when I go in and see her next week for the referral to my OB or not worry until I get bloods done before my first OB appointment in April....

And info would be much appreciated

Ask for a full blood count. The GP should order a first trimester screening blood test anyway and you should be able to take the results or ask your GP to send a copy of the results to your OB.

Just check to see what your normal range is for you, when not pregnant. I found out that i am normally low- around 70 and when i am pregnant it goes up to 113 ish. This is normal for me, but after numerous blood tests etc this wasn't know to me until I was no longer breastfeeding etc. To put your mind at rest the body has a fantastic way of bumping the platelets up through hormones when you are pregnant. It is rare to go below 100. Look at me i'm normally 70 and even i didn't go below 100 when pregnant. I did have to miss out on an epidural just in case though.

If you are worried you need to track what your body is doing through you second pregnancy. I had fortnightly bloods.

70 is extreamly low and would be very rare to be normal in anyone, are you sure you are talking about platelets and not something else, like heamoglobin? 70 would be considered to be a moderate case of amaemia. As Beema said normal is between 150-400. Problems with low platlets would be increased risk of bleeding and briusing.

Thanks Winter , I am hopeful that it may not reoccur, so hopefully someone has been through the same and had a different outcome for their subsequent pregnancies

I am curious as to your levels as well KtsMum, unless there is another underlying reason for such low levels while not being pregnant. I would like mine to go up in pregnancy at least it would take me into the normal range

Yes i have an underlying reason for my blood- so I have found out through many specialist appointments. My point for you though is that even with this the hormones in my pregnancy still managed to improve my platelet count.

I haven't had low platelets in pregnancy, but I used to work in the pathology field If I had a history of low platelets in pregnancy I would be getting them checked as soon as possible after I found out I was pg. As Rumpleteaser says, just get your GP to add a Full Blood Count to the regular antental bloods they request. It's not very much extra blood to have taken.

I have been to many specialists for my condition and yes I am talking about platelets. I know i am lower than normal. My point was that I am normally 70 (which is extremly low) however in pregnancy i went up to 112 and above.
