A friend who is also pregnant went to a massage therapist today. He massaged the top and middle of her back, but didn't massage the bottom of her back because he said it can cause miscarriage. This is the first time I have heard this. I was wondering if anyone else has ever heard this?
there are people on here who can probably give you more info, but most people i know won't massage at all in the first tri because of the increased risk of mc. i have a friend who does deep tissue massage and he refuses to touch me from ovulation date through til AF (or 13 weeks if we have one take) because of the risks involved.
There is a minor risk of m/c for deep pressure in lower back, and also for deep pressure in calves, and a special point at the top of shoulders.
Some people avoid massage in first trimester, but all of the points mentioned above should be avoided throughout all of pregnancy.
You can do light massage in the lower back, which is often enough to give some relief, but you should only go to a massage therapist who is specifically trained in pregnancy massage, as they know all about certain induction points, lying position, other contraindications etc.
