    Bleeding After Intimacy

I am 12 week pregnant and last night after my DH and I DTD, there was what seemed like alot of blood. I have never had this happen before and I have had three children. I was so so freaked out by this, but his morning there is no blood and back to CM. I rang my midwife and she assure me this is absolutely normal, as long as it stops. Something about the cervix being irritated. I have not only never had this happen to me whilst pregnant, I have never even heard of that either.

So to those of you who have some experience, does it continue for the entire pregnancy or might this be a one off?? Do certain 'positions' make it worse??

I am almost too scared to go there again, and probably need to ask my midwife more questions before I do, but I thought maybe fellow BellyBelly people may have some words of wisdom!

    Thanks

When i was 9 weeks i had a bleed. We hadn't DTD since conception so that didnt have anything to do with it. I went to the hospital. the doctor had a look and the explanation I was given is that the cells that are normally on the inside of the cervix, some of them made their way to the outside of the cervix. They are more tender and sensitive than the outside ones. This won't cause any harm but it obviously causes worry and concern and in my case, a bit of bleeding.

Positions in which the cervix is being hit i would suggest not doing for a while.

Otherwise go get yourself checked out for peace of mind.

I have been told I have this too, and back then they called it cervical errosion (although that's not accurate in describing what's actually going on). I bleed after pap smears, sometimes quite a lot. Sometimes I bleed after DTD, whether pregnant or not. Those positions where penetration is deeper will make it more likely your cervix will get knocked about. I tend not to worry any more - I just wear pads for about 12 hours and it stops.

I had 2 really bad bleeds when pg with DS after dtd. Both times I rang the midwife and she made me come up to the hospital to get checked, and the first question she asked was 'What had we we been doing' Apparently it is really common. As long as it stops and doesn't get heavier, you just need to take it a little easier, but it should be fine. It also happened when I was pregnant with the twins. We stopped any action after that - poor DH

    THanks for your replies everyone.

Cricket, when you said you had two bad bleeds, does that mean there were time you DTD and you didn't bleed??

I have to go to the DR today as I have negative blood and have been told that because of the bleed I will need the Anti D injection. this does not please me if I have to have the injection everytime it happens for the next 6 months!!!

I guess the only way to find out is by trial and error if it is going to continue happening.

    Thanks Again!!

I had this happen. Ob had a look and I had a polyp. Apparently it's quite common as the pg hormones stimulate the growth. I was supposed to have surgery to have it removed after birth but it disappeared with the pg hormones.

LF - earlier on in my pregnancy with DS, I didn't bleed. Then I think I got to about 20-ish weeks when it happened the first time. It scared us so much we didn't try again for a couple of weeks and it happened again. I don't think I let DH touch me after that. Poor man.. I think he has grown up hoping he'd get a wife who'd want to dtd 3 times a day when she was pregnant, instead he got me lol. It happened the first time we tried when I was pg with the twins, and we didn't try again

I had a couple of bleeds after DTD during the first trimester. The first one was around 7 or 8 weeks I think, the other was maybe closer to 12. Because DF is a positive blood type and I am negative, the midwife did a blood test to check for antibodies but all was fine. We've DTD plenty of other times (multiple times a week) and all has been fine. We're faily cautious now and try to adjust things so my cervix doesn't cop a beating (for lack of a better term) but there's been plenty of times that things have gotten a touch more vigerous and it's been ok.

I had a small bleed after DTD when I was around 14w with DD.
My OB adviced me to use positions that didn't have deep penetration.
We did that and never had any other issues.

    No probs this pregnancy either.

THanks for the continued replies. I have been to the Dr this morning and she has said that she wants to do a papsmear to 'doublecheck' it is nothing else. Not really sure how I feel about this, considering it seems normal in other people. Perhaps I should get another opinion??

Maybe it was the level of bleeding? When I bled it was only very light. Or maybe your doctor is just wanting to be cautious. Personally I'd do the pap smear, but that's me. If you're not sure, get a second opinion. You can always go back and ask for the pap smear should you want to.

Nothing else like what? What is she ruling out with the pap?
I'd want to be certain it's warranted before consenting to a pap when pregnant. JMO.

    Hi Snacks,
I got a second opinion and they said certainly not to have a pap as I had a miscarriage in December so it is not safe to do one unless the bleeding continued each time we DTD. I think she was thinking lesions on the cervix, or cancer forming cells. I was recommended a women's clinic that would use a super super soft brush *if* I have to get on in the next few weeks. I am so glad I got a second opinion because I couldn't work out how come it is not safe to do a pap after 20 weeks, but it is before. Anyway, will wait and see what happens.
