My cat bit me this morning, do I need to worry?

Hi ladies,

I'm 23w now. This morning, when I was having breakfast as usual, my cat who's 1 year and 6 months old bit me out of blue. It was sudden and hurt a lot, I couldn't help screaming which woke up my sleeping husband. The cat then ran away. There were a few marks by her teeth and two of them were deeper which bleed for a while. I used medical alcohol to disinfect the wound.

Should I go to see the Vet or GP? I don't know if it matters this time. I often get scratches from my cat, but not as bad as this time. What should I do?

You can get a test for antibodies, but like my Ob said, you literally have to suck on cat poo by an infected cat to get toxo... you will likely be fine but you can ask your Ob for a blood test.

No, I wouldn't be worried, as long as you gave it a wash straight away and put some disinfectant/alcohol on it to kill any nasties... I had two cats while pg with DD (now I have 3!!) and was forever getting scratched and bitten when bathing them - I never had an issue. As Kelly says, you have to be pretty filthy to get toxo or anything, if you're worried or it gets infected a quick visit to your GP to see what can be done should put your mind at ease.

I spoke to my vet when i was pg as my cat would bite and scratch occasionally, she (the Vet) was 16 weeks pg at the time, with her second, and she took no real additional precautions.
Like Kelly said you literally have to eat the poo (which is why gardening is bad, especially if you are a nail biter ).

But in saying that, if you are going to stress about it and cause yourself worry, ring your local vet and have a chat with them... if they cant put your mind at ease, go and see a GP, its better to that than worry yourself.

Thank you all for suggestion. I've spoken to my OB and she said the similar thing - as long as the wound is cleaned properly, no need to worry.

I disagree. A cat bite can get easily infected. Keep a very close eye on it for redness and swelling and head straight to your doctor if you notice anything like this. Cats have nasty bacteria in their mouths and although you don't need to worry about toxo from a bite a blood infection or abscess is something you don't want. My worst bite was from a foxy. I cleaned the wound properly and went to the hospital for a good clean and some ABs. The next day I could literally see the infection move up my arm and was almost admitted. I had to go back to the hospital every day for i/v ABs.
So keep a very close eye on it.
