Is Smoked Cod safe to eat?

I am having a major craving for my Mum's smoked cod mornay. The only thing is I don't know if smoked cod is ok?

Does anyone know. I can find anything on the net to say it is on the excluded list of fish. All I can find is that you shouldn't eat it raw which I won't be doing, it will be fully cooked. I have an ob appointment this arvo so I can check with him, but I just wanted your opinions before I buy the ingredients.

    Thanks

The great and all powerful oricle that is google says do not eat COLD smoked fish esp that from a deli but canned smoked fish can be eaten safely. It doesn't say anything about if its freshly smoked. It seems to be a listeria concern on most websites

Big bummer but I'd rather be safe than sorry though. Does it make any difference that it will be fully cooked and piping hot? You simmer it in water first and then cook it in a caserole dish for about 30 mins.

Oh well, time to think about what else I can eat.

I thought that you weren't supposed to have ANY smoked foods during pg? But I haven't really researched this, hopefully someone else will be able to confirm (or not!).

I think its ok if its piping hot and eaten hot and no left overs eaten. It says to avoid cod liver oil because of the high level of vitamin A which can cause birth defects but it says nothing about the fish itself how odd you'd think there'd be more on it..

I did just find this one small bit from www.babycenter.com.au:

"One concern about seafood, raw or cooked, is PCB and chemical contamination. As a general rule, ocean fish such as tuna, sea bass, sole, cod, haddock, and plaice are safer than river and lake varieties."

    Thanks ladies.

I am going to ask the Ob but even if he says it is ok, I don't think I will risk it.

Yes you can eat it - it is cooked! You can't eat smoked seafood that is eaten raw, like smoked salmon for example.

We had smoked cod for tea two nights ago. OR as it is called in our house "Yellow Fish". YUM. Perfectly ok since it is cooked before eating.

Smoked cod Mornay - sounds reeeeeally yummy - can you post the recipe sometime?
