    Question First Ob appoint

    Hi all,
I am pregnant with my first baby and have my first ob appointment on Tuesday...Im just wondering what questions I should be asking him, I have no idea what to ask as I dont really know what I even have to know
What sort of questions did you ask your ob and what can I expect to happen at this first appoint?
    Thanks...

Apart from costs and stuff, ask him for what tests you'll be doing and when.

Also ask about who does what - when do you go to your GP, and when to the specialist? And when to the hospital?

There's a great article on BellyBelly - Choosing An Obstetrician – 11 Questions You MUST Ask which covers everything.

I read the article too, but I really have no idea about what I want to happen during the birth...I dont really know the options and as you say pregpan, the pros/cons...Feel like I dont know anything...
Im also the first in my family/friends to have a baby so I dont have anybody to ask about my options, questions to ask etc.

    Hey Em,

Won't go into the questions to ask thing, cos I just don't feel like an expert. But in terms of what to expect in the appt, I have a laugh because I feel like I get around 2 minutes with my OB - lots of people get weighed (I don't, he just doesn't do this, which is fine by me), I always get BP measured, he has a listen to the heartbeat using the Doppler (& you get to hear it too, it's soooo cool, the best part), sometimes I think that they take measurements of your stomach, and sometimes a bit of a poke around. And if you've had any scans/tests, mine usually runs through these. I think that the reason my appts are so short are because I'm as healthy as I can be expected to be, so there's not much else to talk about - which is a good thing.

In terms of birth plans - go with an open mind, and read as much as you can from as many different places, so that you know & understand what your options are. & when you get to your hospital classes they give you more info. & ask lots of questions on BB - there are so many people here to help, it's just great.

My experience with my OBS is the same as Janno. I have just been diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes and he was still happy with everything else with my pg, so my appointments usually only last for 15 mins or so. (I am still on mthly vists ATM)

Thanks Janno and Jooleshere, at least I have an idea of what to expect at the appoint now...Guess I was just worried that he would want to know my birth plan at this appoint and I really have no idea at this stage, but as you say the hosp classes and BB members will help build my knowledge of options...
    Thanks

Hi Emma - with my first pregnancy I was just like you - i didn't know what i had to do. I just went along to my first ob appointment and he did all of those things that Janno said. He also did a dating scan. I had no birth plan, haven't had one in either pregnancy and won't have one this time around either. I am happy to go with the flow, and i trust my ob to keep me and my baby safe.
I hope your appointment goes well.
