Question One artery in umbilical cord

Hi ladies i need some wisdom.... My friend has just had an ultrasound and found that their baby only has one artery in their umbilical cord. Can this lead to any other future problems??
    There are no other abnormalites.
    Thanks in advance!

My DD had 1 artery in her umbilical cord and she is a perfectly healthy 3 year old.

There is some concern if the baby has other accompanying problems that could suggest down's syndrome.

    Hi,

One of my sister's friends also had the same thing - and her baby turned out to be absolutely fine. I believe that they will monitor the artery in scans to be sure that the baby is getting what it needs, but usually the baby would be perfectly fine.

    Cheers,

That is another thing. They will monitor the cord flow etc to see if baby is getting enough as babies with 1 artery in their cord can sometimes be born on the smaller side. But my DD was over 9lb so it doesn't always affect them but just something to think about.

Just to add my god-daughter had one artery in her cord when she was born and she was fine. They monitored her kidneys for the first day or so to make sure all functioning and that was all. She also had a knot in her cord which was almost completely black but still all ok and she is a very energetic and smart little 1.5yo cookie.

It's considered a "soft marker" for other abnormalities so they'll usually do a really thorough scan to rule those out.
I only had one artery in my cord and I'm fine....physically anyway LOL!
