    Low Lying Placenta

    HI,
I have low lying placenta at 18 weeks scan and the most recent scan at 32 weeks. Unfortunately I placenta is 26mm from my cervix and I need another scan in 3 weeks time. Which is good as I like to see my baby.

    1. Have anyone had similar condition before?
2.Can I still have natural birth? I have booked in the birthing center and they would not take anyone unless it is 55mm for the cervix.

Any response will be helpful Thank you.

HM, I had a low lying placenta at my 18 week scan, but it was far enough away by the 33 week mark. However, my ob said that I could still have a vb if it was just 23mm away. My guess is that the birth centre might have tighter guidelines, so unfortunately, unless it moves enough (which is still possible) you might miss out. But the good news is that you should still be able to birth vaginally.

    Smile Thanks

    Hi Mantaray
Sorry about the delay. I talked to my midwife and she said the same thing and I am having another scan in 2 weeks and hopefully it will move. Anyway she reassured me that even if I need to have my bb in the hospital, I can still go back to Birthing center during recovering period and yes I can have VB. Thank god

Hi hippymum, I had low lying placenta as well. At my 32 week scan it was 3cm from the cervix. My ob & hospital preferred it to be at least 5cm for me to have a VB. I was due to have another scan at 37 weeks but I went into labour early at 36+6 and so had emergency c/s - placenta was still low anyway.

Good to hear you can have a VB, definitely get scans right up to the last minute because it can still move up.

I was so glad to see this thread.

I have been told that my placenta is low as well. Not sure if it low lying or margianl but apparently it is right on the edge of the cervix.

I am going to a hospital so there is no problems as to where I deliver but she was very concerned about if I had any bleeding I must call them and there is a chance that if it doesnt move that I will need to have a c-section.

I wasnt really to concerned until I was reading in my pregnancy book about what this means and that if you have bleeding early you may need to have an emergency c-section earlier in your pregnancy. This was not something I wanted to hear as I am so scared to have a c-section and scared for my little one if it has to be delieverd early.

I will need to have another scan at 34weeks to see if it has moved.

Mantaray-did you birth naturally or by c-sec?
Hippymum-has your palcenta moved or are you going to ahve a c-sec? (must be very close for you now)

    Re:AliBaby

    Hi Alibaby
I went back for the scan at 34 weeks and the radiologist told me it as moved and the last part takes longer move away from cervix. And my Dr looked at my report and she is happy for me to have VB. She told me if the placenta is 0 to 23mm for the cervix, it is consider high risk and My original measurement was 26mm for my cervix. And she also told me to watch out for signs of bleeding.

My due date is this Friday and I will update about my experience if you are interested.

I'm so glad I found this thread!

I was told at my 18-22 week scan that my placenta was low lying (21mm) from cervix, when I told my mil about it she said just do what the docs tell you as it could have major complications and you will need a cs which i do not want! My next scan is december 23rd!

I'm praying all goes well for you HM!
