31 weeks, squeezing pains and dark bleeding - what could it be?

A good friend of mine is on her way to the hospital to get checked out. She has had what she describes as "squeezing" pains all day (which she dismissed as braxton hicks) but tonight when she went to the loo she's noticed shes started to bleed some dark red blood. Its not pouring out but she says it's a bit more than just spotting.

I hope bubs and her are okay.

Does anyone know what this could be? Her placenta is posterior and high so it's not a praevia problem. Could it be pre-term labour?

Hope your friend and bub are okay, must be scary. Does she have someone with her? Hope she's all right, Mara.

Quick update - the pains apparently aren't contractions, and the bleeding has slowed. She's been admitted for observation JIC so got our everything is okay and she'll be home tomorrow.

That's good news that it's not pre-term contractions, Mara! Will keep everything crossed for her that the rest of her pregnancy is problem free. Glad she has her DH with her and that she's being kept in overnight. Hope that the rest of the night passes uneventfully for her!

Hoping your friend is a lot better today. Great to hear they weren't contrations. That must have been so scarey for her. I hope bubby stays in there for a few more weeks yet.

Hey Mara, just found this, but thought I'd add my experience with this.
I had the same as you described she had, but at 25 weeks. THey u'sed and investigated and couldn't find anything. They thought I was going to deliver.
But I went on to have a term bub - who had held on through a uterine tear for that 14weeks.
Has she had a c/sec before?
