I'm pretty certain the genitals (external) aren't completely formed at 12 weeks and aren't until around 16 or so weeks, hence why you can find out the gender at the 19-20 week scan.
I had my scan at 13 weeks last Tuesday and the sonographer is 80% certain this bub is a girl.. He said most of the time 12 weeks is too early but by 13 weeks there's a little extra growth which can sometimes show signs. The external genitalia are of course not yet formed but he pointed out these 2 white bone like looking lines and said the bottom one is what grows into a penis or clitoris. In little boys it points up and becomes a penis, in little girls it points down and becomes a clitoris. Our bubs was pointing down. He said this only starts to occur around the 13th week so some people don't get to see at their 12 week NT scan. Our ultrasound firm performs the NT scan between 12 weeks 5 days and 13 weeks 5 days, no earlier, no later and he said he can often tell by this time and hasn't been wrong yet..
I'm not rushing out to buy pink yet but we'll find out for sure next month I guess! Can't wait!!
we were told at our 12 week scan with ds2 that he looked like a boy. she told me not to start painting blue walls yet or anything, but it did help us to have that extra time to concentrate on boys' names! LOL
I had my NT scan at 12wks3days and I could tell my bub was a girl. The sonographer didn't say anything but to me it was SO obvious. She spread her legs when the sonographer was showing me her. I asked them to confirm I was right at the 19week scan and the sonographer said she was sure bub was a girl also. Up until that 12week scan I was convinced I was having a boy.
The sonographer told me at 10 weeks she was pretty sure it was a boy...she was right! That was because I new her as I used to work there, I don't think they would normally say anything that early. I was really surprised when she asked at that scan If we wanted to find out. It's amazing how early they can tell.
With ds2 we asked the sonographer if she could tell what he was. She said on some babies it's quite easy to tell and she thought he was a boy. She was right!
At 12w5d we were told DD was a girl. The sonographer said the ureter is the dead give away, points down in a girl and up in a boy. She told me she was 100% certain, although I felt sure I was having another boy! The place I went to only do gynae and obstetric US and the sonographer I saw has worked there for 17 years so perhaps she was so certain as she was very experienced?
Hehe I'm sure they could have told me at my 19 week scan but I asked them not to, I want a surprise But I'm sure if your sonographer is experienced they would have seen enough scans to be able to tell for you that early if you want to know.
I think they can say with a little more certainty if it is a boy. When I had my 12 week scan she said she had an idea of the gender but wouldn't tell me because she couldn't be certain. I've just had my 19 week scan and we found out that we are having a girl. The whole time I was looking for the boy bits lol as I was so used to seeing them!
They can tell at the 12 wk scan but there's only 50% accuracy, where as at the 19wk scan there is 90% accuracy.
I was told at 12 wks baby was a boy but dont rush out going nuts on blue just yet. I then had a scan at 16wks and was told boy again but hold off buying blue. Properly confirmed boy at 19 wk scan.
Its all in the "angle of the dangle", babies bits look the same at 12 wks but if the dangle points down and is parallel with the spine its a girl, if the dangle is a 30 degree angle to the spine and points upwards more (but not straight up) its a boy. There is a very interesting site that shows you all about this not sure if i can share the link on here though, dont want to get into trouble
Re: can u tell gender by scan at 12 week scan? how early did u find ou
Hi Lizbo!
I haven't been on for ages! I had my scan done at Exact Radiology Ipswich as I was living in Springfield but the Springfield one didn't do the NT Scan. It was done by an older very experienced male sonographer, he was great and yep spot on! My little DD just turned 2 on Thursday
