    Question about EDD

I just got my positive HPT this morning. Am planning on doing another one tomorrow just to make sure.

What I wanted to ask is how do you find out your EDD? I know that people have said to calculate from your last period. The problem I have is that I have PCOS, and had only just started getting a regularish cycle at the end of last year. I thought nothing of not getting my period in Jan (even though I did a test and it came back negative). But this time it came back positive.

If I did from my last period, then I would be 8 weeks and 5 days pregnant. WHich is fine if I am, but what if Im only 4 weeks pregnant? Will it matter if I book it in with and EDD of September sometime, and then get it changed to October? Or should I wait until I get blood tests/ultrasounds to get a more concrete idea.

I feel a little overwhelmed by all this at the moment, and just need some advice.

    Thanks

First of all, welcome to BB, Secondly, congrats on your pregnancy. And third, i had a similar problem, i had no idea when my period was before i got pregnant so my GP sent me for a dating scan which gave us the EDD. they seem to like to change the EDD at each scan you go to but you should stick with the first scans dates as they are the most accurate.
    Good luck and congrats again!!!

    Firstly, congratulations on your +HPT!

in regard to the EDD, yes its taken from your last period....maybe the best thing to do would be to make an appt with your GP and request a dating scan that way you will know exactly how far along you are

Do you have any idea of when you ovulated, or when you might have conceived?

The BB due date calculator lets you change your cycle length and luteal phase (when you ovulate) if that helps at all.

Generally, I'd be going with the later date to avoid induction at the end, but I think a month is a pretty big discrepancy to have, because it means you could be way out with your 12ish week scan to check the nuchal fold. You might want to have a dating scan, or a blood test to give a better idea.

    Congratulations, by the way!

I have very irregular periods myself (no known cause, just seems to be "one of those things") so I had no idea when I had my last period - they booked me in for a dating scan but I ended up going for an emergency one a few days before that because of a suspected ectopic. They were more thorough (internal when they had a hard time seeing from the external)

That one gave me the EDD of April 23rd, and when I went along for my original dating appointment that tech said it was more like May 10th. The April one was right going by all further scans I've had In fact, all of the others I've had have never been more than two days off for all the measurements!

So my advice would be to ask for an internal check if you're up for it. It was so much more accurate for me, and I even got to see Smudge's heartbeat that early on - apparently it was the earliest the tech had ever seen a heartbeat I grow strong babies, apparently

    Thank you so much everyone.

Im off to the doctors tomorrow to find get the blood test, and try to get a dating scan.

Ihave another question, I keep getting these dull pains around my waist area. They usually last for less than a second, but I get them on both the left and right side. I am going to talk to the doctor tomorrow about them, but was hoping someone would be able to tell me what they might be.

i had the same pains when pregnant with my DD and was told it was just everything starting to stretch to accommodate her - but definitely ask your GP if you're concerned

Thank you so much. You have put my mind at ease a little bit there. I am so worried about keeping this baby that I freak out at anything.

i had the WORST period type pains EVER, i was working and it would litterally bring me to my knees at times, i was quite worried but it was just streching or implantation or something. All the little pains and aches are worrying!! but most the time are just normal! good luck at the docs. look forward to hearing how far along you are!!

    Congratulations!!

Do you know when you ovulated? 38 weeks from ovulation is the most accurate indicator - more so than the first day of your LMP (as cycle length varies) and scans- which have proven to be largely innacurate. The overwhelming amount of "overdue" babies attests to their inaccuracy! Your body doesn't get it wrong - the machine does!

Whilst having an EDD is useful to help you prepare for birth, I'd recommend not getting too caught up with your estimated due date. In the end, bubs will choose their own due date, and in a standard pregnancy this is anywhere between 38 to 42 weeks. So 4 weeks of potential variation! Like someone else said, go with the latest date you receive to avoid the pressure of artificial induction, as this can increase the risks.
So long as you have everything prepared well in advance of 38 weeks - you can just relax and enjoy the journey, and tune into to those little signs that may tell you that your babies arrival is around the corner.

I wish you the very best pregnancy and birth. Plenty of support in here!!

thanks everyone for your support, and responses.

The reason for wanting to know my EDD is so i can start calling OBs to get my prefered one. I do understand that they are not often accurate, but at least its a date to work towards.

Unfortunately I wasnt doing any charting, so I truly have no idea.

I went to the doctor yesterday, as I wasnt feeling 100%, they confirmed the pregnancy, then took blood and have sent me for the dating scan, which I am having today. Will they be able to tell me at the scan my dating? Or do I need to wait to find that out from my dr?

I also have PCOS. The dr said that I needed to cease using this straight away. I was abit confused about this as I was under the impression that this was provided to pregnant women who had GD.

I had the dating scan today.

I am 5w1d pregnant. She said that she could see the sack, but was having issues seeing the baby. Apparently this is normal, and they have recommended I come back for another u/s in 2-3 weeks to confirm.
