I was talking to my doctor about this when we first found out i was pg as we were thinking about flying to Qld for christmas (would only be a few hours flying time). She said it would be fine as it's not a long distance, but just to make sure to have a short walk around frequently and drink lots of water, as pg women are more at risk of developing blood clots. How far do you think you would be flying? If it's just a short trip it should be ok, as should a long trip (like overseas), but depending on the distance maybe have a chat to your GP about it?
Yep. Should be fine! Always a good idea to stretch your legs etc during long flights anyway I guess the main thing is whether you get morning sickness - can you stand to be in an enclosed space for that period of time and chuck into a paper bag if you need to? :P
I flew from Europe when pregnant with DD (found out I was pregnant halfway round our round the world trip) at about 6 weeks. This time we flew from Thailand as I didn't know I was pregnant. I have had no problems but as the others have said do all the exercises and get up and move around lots.
I flew from Melbourne to Townsville and back when I was 6 weeks pregnant, not a problem except my morning sickness decided to start on take off from Melbourne and stayed for 6 weeks! Take some travel calm (the one safe for pregnancy), but other than that it was all fine.
I would be 9 weeks but I have just found out Im pregnant after a miscarriage and have been trying TTC for 4 years ago and dont want anything to go wrong. It would only be to Melbourne but my naturopath thinks its better not to?
I can't imagine why flying for an hour would be a problem. You regularly sit for an hour, no doubt, on most days. (Of course I don't know your medical history or anything - maybe there is a good reason, and you got to do what the doctor says of course)
I flew from Melbourne to Hong Kong to Osaka and back when i was 6 weeks pregnant. No problems with the flight, though MS started in Japan, which wasn't much fun at all. I just made sure to drink lots of water during, before, and after the flight, and to get up and walk around from time to time, as I always do.
A one-off flight (or a return trip) is fine - it is only if you are flying a lot that it can be a problem. A friend of mine is a hostess and they have to inform the airline as soon as they start TTC so they can be taken off active air duty and put in a desk job.
Apparently the pressure changes and different radiation levels are bad if you are constantly exposed, as a hostie would be.
But for everyone else it is fine.
I'm heading off to Queensland in two weeks and I can't wait! I'll be 29 weeks by then.
Oh yeah its totally fine. I think the airline cut off is 30 weeks but dont quote me on that. I'm flying to melbourne soon - I'll be 17 weeks then. My SIL flew to Melbourne from the USA for a wedding when she was 28 weeks - no probs.
I flew to Mackay and had a connecting flight home landing in Brisbane and then back to Sydney. I had a stress attack at the airport and rung my OB and they said I was find to fly. I think I was about 9 weeks from memory.. I was told I could fly until 36 weeks... The check-in lady also said the same thing. I was told to get some compression stockings (from your chemist) just to be sure as you have a higher risk of blood clots (this is the risk I was told about, so nothing for bubba but just yourself).. So I just wore the stockings for my next lot of flights and drank lots, got up every 20 minutes and did a few laps of the plane. Also if you get there early or check-in online try try and get the exit rows as you get more leg room. If you check-in early in person tell them you are pregnant and I ask for the exit rows. I got them for all my flights as they moved people around to accommodate me..
If you checkout the airline website under health you will see what they say about travelling while PG and what you can do. I had 5 flights all up while I was PG for work and all fine.
