    Small Kidney?

Hi, This is about my SIL - obviously not me!
Anyway, she is 21 weeks pregnant now and she has been told that her bub has a small kidney.. about half the size that it should be. First they told her that it had down syndrome which got her really upset, but they confirmed that the US read wrong (wtf? they were wrong!) So anyway, bub still has a small kidney, will it grow or is it a sign of something being not right?
    TIA

It may well grow, but it might not too. I don't think there is a sure fire answer to your question. It will need to be monitored and if it's not growing it will be assessed after the baby is born for structure and function. Even if it's not functioning, you can live with just one kidney.
If they misdiagnosed DS, i wouldn't be too concerned about any of their ultrasound comments! I'd be going to another ultrasound place, preferably in a city with a good reputation for a second opinion. That is disgraceful and shouldn't happen. If a sonographer isn't sure they should keep quiet until they are certain. What unnecessary worry for you poor SIL.

Yeah I know, I feel so bad for her, but the place she went to has only opened maybe a month ago. She is being monitored though, but they only told her that it may or may not grow, which is not very helpful for her!

This happened to me with my last little man. At the 20 week scan they said he had a 'small left kidney' which in the end didn't even exist. He was only born with one kidney which is quite large to accommodate for the work of two. He is a completely normal, healthy little man.
