Had half a glass of wine when I was visiting Mum and Dad a few weekends ago... weirdly, really, because I rarely drink when I'm NOT pregnant. I'm not that fond of ham, but I've had such cravings for bacon. OMG.

I figure that we generally have pretty good hygiene standards here, and listeria outbreaks are very rare. It's pretty unlikely to get a contamination. Plus, I think of health being a holistic thing - mental health in pregnancy counts too!! If you're going crazy with food deprivation (and let's face it, there are so many other deprivations you have to put up with!) then it's not good for the baby. Or that's what I'm telling myself.

Gosh, if I followed all of the 'rules' of eating wehn pg, then I would starve!! I eat deli meats, cold, cooked what ever, as long as it's fresh and from somewhere I have eaten from regularly and know is fresh. I also ate soft boiled eggs when pg with DD. I had terrible cravings for it! This pg it's ham and tomato sandwiches. And beer, but I have only indulged a few times in that one, and only light beer. I'm not usually a beer drinker though! I have eaten bbq chicken from the shops, take away, kebabs and cold fresh salads. I am as sensible as I can be about eating high risk foods, heat things like take aways and bbq chicken. But I just can't restrict my diet like that. It is getting a bit ridiculous to me now, with what is restricted for pregnant women to eat!!

Good to know! I thought I would get grilled here on BB for eating ham, but obviously not!

Now I want some polony! :-D

I have been eating cooked seafood (which I also heard is a no-no), had a cheese kransky (cooked) on the weekend, ate a pre-prepared salad that my grandma bought, added to and served me, takeaway chicken and etc.

Eh, I've had a few ham sangas this preg, nice quality ham mmm. I've also had half a can of pepsi, fast food lettuce and a few other no no's. Don't really get the no soft cheese thing, as far as I know all cheeses in Aus need to be pasturized by law, so I'm not sure what the issue is with that. I am a bit paranoid at times with what I eat, but I trust my instincts.

I thought that too with the soft cheese but then I read that apparently the pasturisation has nothing to do with it, that it has something to do with the rind and temperature instead...but again, I have no idea what the actual truth is.

Ja I've been eating takeaway burger lettuce too...and soft eggs.

Ahhh okay...beware the evil rind! Actually I don't eat the rind anywho, I mostly eat goats cheese and brie (certainly not everyday, once a month maybe) and I nom the cheese out of the rind, oh yeah!

Lol with how sick I've been, I've been eating whatever I can keep down! So deli meats haven't been excluded from my diet!
(though I must admit, I haven't been eating them AS much as what I used to, simply because i dont feel like it)

But at one point, I was CRAVING roast beef, tomato, lettuce, cheese and seeded mustard sandwiches *druels* boy were they good!!

Lol I don't feel bad, my theory is that everything is said to kill us these days. I mean our parents didn't know about these "rules" and we turned out ok! And our kids will be exposed to these meats and such during life anyway! I just don't go silly and eat them if they're older than a day or two.. Which you shouldn't anyway from what I understand?

I LOOOOVE leg ham!! One massive advantage to Xmas season.. All the delish leg hams! Lol theres one nearl always sitting in our fridge

I think the main culprit in listeria cases these days are reheated foods meaning foods that are incorrectly reheated. Thanks for this thread lol, I just raided the Camembert in the fridge and have to do about 30 blocks walking to work it off! I was told that pre packaged stuff without the rind like ricotta and such is okay and at a pinch the pre packaged ham just in case the deli cross contaminates with uncleaned slicing machines.

Bahaha I just love the thread name!

I have been getting turkey and ham from the deli occasionally and heating it up in the microwave to have on sandwiches.. They put so many damn restrictions on us as pg women and I appreciate that there is a small risk, at times you just have to eat what you are craving!! If the place you're getting it from looks feral and dirty maybe reconsider but as ling as it is from a clean place and you know it's not old then you should be fine...

Sushi has been my craving but unfortunately there is no sushi around me! lol. Otherwise I'd be eating it everyday!

OMG YES!! Soft serve! when I'm NOT pregn, I can't stand it but with this pregnancy & last, oh how I have craved it! With DD, I woke up at 2 am crying my eyes out cause I'd been longing for it for so long & resisted the urge! all I can say is " thank god for 24hr Makka's!" big fatty preggy woman scoffing down a couple of cones at 3am must have looked a sight! (I actually took my own iceMagic! very sad!)
Last pregnancy, I had to ask my ob about all the do's & don'ts cause so much had changed since my 1st about 14 years before. said I was missing the soft cheeses & ham's ect. he basically said to me about women in other countries live off that kind of food & they are all ok. I'm guessing spain, greece, those kind of places with all the yummy food.
I was also having the occasional dark beer (like guiness or old) and he said it was fine, there is alot of good in it for BOTH pregnancy & Breast milk. Only side effect I noticed with DD is she will latch onto anyone with a beer & insist they share it! (so lotsa tanties from her when it's refused!)
I havn't touched the runny eggs, but havn't craved it either. I guess it all just comes down to common sense, if it doesn't look, smell right, been in the fridge a few days, you know, the usual common sense you'd normally have!
