I wonder if that's what they said in the 60's when huffing on a cigarette and sipping on a martini.
Like I said commonsense is at play. If you drink 2 litters of coke a day it's not going to be good for you pregnant or not but when you have a life growing inside it's probably best to ask yourself "am I being healthy". A glass of coke is not going to harm the baby, nor is a glass of wine. But if you are doing anything that is unhealthy in excess it's common sense that it's not good for either of you.
And stressing over every little thing probably isn't good either
IRT cola, it's just the caffiene. As Rouge said, chugging bottles and bottles of the stuff is not good regardless of being utd or not Moderation is the key, pregnant or otherwise, too much of one thing is never good. And yep, commonsense has to play a huge part too when consuming food.
Cola drinks: I'd say it's a bit more than the caffeine though. Coke etc are a pretty worrying ****tail of chemicals... the anti-vomit additive to counteract the 10 teaspoons of sugar springs to mind. But don't mind me and my personal war against the black stuff.
I eat ham occasionally, i've also had sushi, soft cheese and some other things i should probably avoid. I knew i was taking a risk, but i guess at the time i decided it was worth it. I am also craving cola drinks?!
BUT i do think saying 'i had X,Y and Z and my babies are just fine' is a bit of a red herring statement. Sure you and i might have run the risk and not got listeria. But the fact is that contracting listeria is a very real risk, and if you do your risk of a spontaneous miscarriage is high, something like 50%. Yes, Listeria is very uncommon in Australia, but it does still exist.
I absolutely do not judge anyone for what they eat, drink or choose to do, but felt the need to point it out, just so people don't get the wrong idea and are taking informed risks.
ETA_ Bath is that true?? Does Coke have an antiemetic in it????
Junglemum: according to an article I posted in the "What Effect Drinking A Can Of Coke Does To Your Body". But I haven't researched that exact chemical or the truth behind it. The leeching of valuable minerals like calcium and zinc etc from a pregnant woman's body when she drinks cola though is probably of greater concern.
I have MAJORLY cut down on my diet coke intake over the years....I used to drink a couple every day but now have less than 1 a week...the caffiene hypes me up too much since I stopped drinking coffee!
I tend to go for it when it is hot/pub weather though becuase I don't drink booze anymore (before I was preg).
In all 3 pregnancies I live by the rule of moderation. I only eat/ ate fast food where I worked or knew someone that worked there that would answer all my questions honestly (eg when was that last cleaned? Can I have the salads from the back fridge? When is the use by date? etc). You would not believe how many fast food chains (and even small cafes) neglect the simplest of health and safety regulations (including using product well beyond its use by date.
Soft serve comes down to how often the machine is cleaned, if its a reliable machine (not constantly crashing?going into heat treat mode) and if it is being put back together by someone who is capable. I have worked after some nitwit has put the machine together and part of a glove has come out in the machine due to someone leaving it in the barrel.
I usually drink coke zero but since being pregnant I have avoided it because of the asapartame that's in it. (I shouldn't drink it even when not pg but I do!!)
When pg I just stick to coke BUT in saying that, I don't feel like it much when pg anyway which is a good thing!! I might have 2 glasses a week approx..... mainly feel like water or tea/coffee.
Well I just had another ham sammich and ate it without guilt. I think the guilty one tasted better though :-P (only becuase I had to take a break in this one to poo for the first time in 4 weeks, and couldnt scarf the sammy down all at one LOL)
Shanti - I am the same with my drinks...have just wanted LOTS of ICEY water.
