Ultrasound been wrong about sex of baby?

I was told by my Ob it depends on where you get your ultrasound done. If you go somewhere that uses cheaper/old machines there not as clear etc. I went to this place in Perth that alot of obs prefer you to go if you can afford the out-of-pocket expense,he said there machine was roughly half-a-million whereas the scan my ob uses and alot of other places use are only around $40'000. This is what my Ob said anyway ;) I really wanted the best possible chance to find out my babies gender, so I went back to this place at my 19 week scan and was told it was 100% a girl. I didn't think anyone in that profession would use the 100% word but he did and he was right :D

I has an u/s at 19weeks and was told might be a boy but more then likely a girl. I then went and had a 4D scan at 23 weeks to be told yes its a girl. both scans were done at completely different clinics and by completely different people

2 weeks before having Mateauz I asked how my little girl was at an emergency u/s adn the tech said...um if its a girl I dont want to know what that is...

baby came out a boy!

I had a very hard time telling my autistic son that the baby was actually a boy and not a girl.

Whoa. How could they miss a whole other baby + heartbeat. Scary.

At our u/s we aren't convinced at what they told us. DP is less convinced then I am.
We got neutral stuff this time, but if it's a boy we have things from DS, and if it's a girl then we'll have some pink things to catch up on.

It's funny how with DS we didn't question the sex at all. It was so obvious. This time, not so.

Oh no now I'm worried! Was told today that it's a 90% chance of a girl, she had her legs crossed and the cord between her legs but the sonographer said she was pretty sure she saw girl bits...

I was quite happy to go ahead and assume girl, my ob did a casual scan in his office at 8 weeks and picked DS as a boy. His machine wasn't very high tech so (until I read this thread) I was quite happy to go with the odds, figuring if there was a willy there it would have been seen!

AMANDA.. A guy my DH works with was told it was a boy, at 2 or 3 ultra sounds. It came out a girl... They were stoked, as they already had a 2yr old boy. So yep, it does happen.

Wow. I can't believe how many people have been told the wrong sex. I just took their word for it when they told us DS was a boy. I didn't think they got it wrong very often, seems I was wrong.

I was told DD was a boy till my 36 week scan (had one cause of my placenta position)... I had no idea what I was looking for..

This time I have been told boy again but there is no doubt in my mind that they got it wrong this time cause they have gave me a picture of his noddle (in my gallery)... with DD I didnt get a pic of the bits.

My nephew was ment to be a girl!

wow, can't believe how many get it wrong. We've been told twice it's a girl, i'm still going to get it checked in my 4D scan coming up next week.

Have any of you who were told a girl & it wasn't see the 3 lines? I'm so paranoid as everything I bought is pink hahaha even the rocking horse

On the subject of u/s machines....our experience is that yes, the ones that bulk bill are generally a bit older whereas the ones you pay $$ for are well worth the money (you get a rebate anyway). My midwife's face fell when I told her I'd been to Box Hill hossy for my second u/s as she knew immediately the place she'd initially referred us to (right across the road to Box Hill) was a whoooole lot better. We thought we were being smart by not having to pay but regret it now as we didn't get any pics done, and the screen seemed rather blurry. Our 12 week pics (at $$ place) were a whole lot clearer than the 18 weeks screen ones. Anyway, next time!

Just a quick post from a qualified Sonographer in Australia.

Firstly, no Sonographer should ever guarentee you the gender of your baby, mistakes have and will continue to be made. However, most ultrasound machines these days are very clear and it is usually quite obvious to the Sonographer.

Secondly, the gender of your baby can only be seen in one ultrasound plane (bottom up!). Most sonographers won't reveal the gender of the baby until your Morphology scan (ie: 19wks), as the genitals are not fully developed until the 17th week.

And finally, PLEASE focus on having a HEALTHY child and stop being pre-occupied with the gender of your baby. The 19 week morphology scan is designed to assess just that... the MORPHOLOGY of the baby! It is a DIAGNOSTIC scan. If you want to know the gender, there are non-medical/non-referral practices that offer that service.

Parents of a sick or morphologically or neurogically abnormal child would give anything to have a healthy child of EITHER gender. Some people are unable to have a child. Please keep things in perspective. Whatever the gender is now, it wont change, and you will find out soon enough.

Perspective!... perhaps you should focus on having a HEALTHY child!

As a qualified Sonographer, determining the gender depends on...
1. Maternal size
2. Baby's position
3. Pregnancy Gestation

You should never be GUARANTEED the sex of your baby, but if the above points are all optimal and the quality of the machine is good, then it is usually quite clear to the Sonographer.
