I have just found out my little sister is pregnant with an 'oops' baby. She was on the pill and has PCOS and felt pregnant and did a pee test and it came out positive. She isn't sure when her last period was but has felt pregnant for about 2 months (really sore boobs, food tastes funny, bloating). She went to the GP who only did a [ee test, no BT and gave her a termination leaflet (yes she was shocked at being pregnant but how about giving her a pregnancy leaflet as well....).
She went for a US yesterday and the technician couldn't find a baby. She kept going on how she must not be pregnant or she is only a week along (she was a real *****). Of course my sister is really upset so I made her go get a BT and we find the results on Thursday.
SO my question is how far along does she have to be pregnant to see the baby on the scan? Also if the baby is in the tube would you still not see it on the scan? She has positive pee test for over a week.
It depends, but usually after 7 weeks it is visible in an abdominal scan.
If she is less than that, they will need to do a transvaginal scan to see bubs.
If it is in her tubes, a decent technician would have looked for it. The dating scan should check the ovaries, tubes and the uterus to make sure all is well and normal.
However, if she DIDN'T have a TVS then chances are the tech would have missed the sac.
If her blood test comes back positive, she will need to go for another proper scan and find out what is going on. GL!
If the baby was in the tube they would have told her as they need to check the tubes too.
Did they say what was seen on the scan? Was there a yolk sac?
I went for my first scan thinking I was almost 7 weeks pregnant, but I was in fact 5w5d and there was no baby to be seen. I am now days away from my due date with that same baby.
I wish your sister all the best. I hope her blood tests come back with fantastic numbers. Perhaps get the Dr to request another scan for 1-2 weeks time.
Thanks for responding!
They could see nothing there. They did a tummy scan and a internal one. But I honestly have no faith in the technician so she might of missed something. Hoping the BT gives us more info and then we can go back for a better US!
Some of the symptoms could have been from mid cycle so she may well be less than 6-7 weeks.
Hopefully the BT and another scan will clarify things but I'd be asking for a diff. Radiographer
So glad to hear the blood test came back with good news
I wish your sister the very best for her pregnancy.
I can't believe the sonographer...how rude and insensitive!
I would complain...she needs a good kick up the b*m to remind her what a good bed side manner is.
Geez that tech sounds like the one I had doing my DD's hip u/s at 6 weeks "I dunno why they sent you so early nothing will show up, you need to come when bubs is 10 weeks old, her adjusted age is only 2.5 weeks" on and on she went.
DD was in a Pavlik harness 3 days later...and at 10 weeks, when this chick thought we should be going back to check for hip issues, DD was OUT of her harness because we caught it early!
Some people have NO bedside manner, and I would really complain!
I had kinda the same thing. Found out i had PCOS whilst trying to conceive #2 and then had her and fell pregnant by accident for a third time. Blood test was normal. I was pregnant. Had a US at 5 weeks for dates and the sac was empty, but was told that it was too early anyhow and not to stress. Had another scan at 8 weeks and it was still empty, so i had a D&C.
I wish from my heart that this does not happen to your sister and that the baby flourishes well.
