Hi all, my wife's water broke last night at 12:30am, which was about 22 hours ago. The hospital seemed keen to have her take an inducer to bring on labour if it had not started by 24 hours, however I do not want to do that. being that she is first time mum she is scared and would likely do what ever they said but I am not such a walk over ......
I want to know if there is any sound medical reason to induce after 24 hours of broken water as I have read about lots of risks in taking the induction medication to both wife and baby. I know about infection however if we are managing that, I do not see a problem waiting 48 hours.....
I had premature rupture of membranes at 36 weeks with my first child, and labour stalled. I was given 72 hours but was required to take oral anti-biotics to help prevent infection. After 72 hours, I was still only having random contractions so went back to hospital and was put on syntocinin IV drip. I was disappointed at first but it all went well. I had a 7 hour labour, no pain relief drugs and a vaginal birth.

If your wife decides not to go for the induction the hospital will most likely ask her to keep an eye on her temperature, as a rising temp could indicate infection. They might give her a thermometer for regular temp charting. Also avoid sex and watch for any discharge that is not clear fluid. Many hospitals advise a 48hour limit between waters breaking and labour now based on a desire to reduce inductions and other interventions. Good luck!
