Stupid ?? but what is Listeria exactly

Ok soooo this seems soooo dumb but what is Listeria exactly?? Is it food poisening???? What does it do to bubba i know you can miscarry but does it do anything else if you dont miscarry???? I know all the foods and that you should avoid because of it but i wanted to find out exactly what it is.... Thanks for answering my stupid question...
