6 week scan and very concerned

Hi. I just went for my 6 week ultrasound today. The doctor said the fetus is measuring around 5 weeks. The dates cannot be wrong as I did ivf. We saw a heartbeat but the strength wasn't measured and now I am a complete mess. I can't stop crying and am so concerned this means miscarriage. Has anyone had a 6 week scan and measured smaller? I have to go back next week before I can be referred to an obstetrician and I am petrified. I am not sure I can make it the week. Does anyone have any similar experiences?

    aw hunni hugs!!

dont be too stressed about the measurment. Bubs hb was recorded and thats the best thing u need. The heart beat would have been around 90-110 i gather as it only started beating a week ago. U prob just have a small bub but dont worry bub will prob catch up. Your doc will get the scan results by tomorrow so im sure they will let u know if there are any problems. HTH and keep ur chin up sweetie, ur doing a great job!!

I am so sorry that you are going through this my love.

It's great there was a heartbeat - and sometimes the measurements can be out with such a tiny tiny baby. Sending you comfort as you wait to find out more.

I did IVF so was still seeing my fertility doctor - she didn't measure heartbeat - we just saw the flicker - she just said come back in a week before she could refer me to my ob - so not sure if there will be any scan results - it was just an internal scan.
I hate this waiting ! I hope the heart doesn't stop beating. Do you know why I would be 6 weeks (and dates aren't incorrect because ivf) and only 5 weeks - does it suggest a developmental issue?

Easily said but try to relax and not stress, keep telling yourself it will be ok (i know it must be hard)

I was certain with my dates with DD4 and the 1st dating scan made bub smaller, it is very hard when it is that small to be 100% accurate.

    Good luck xo

im not sure hun.. i dont think it has any big dramas that bub may be a little small.. Could it have been the person that was measuring bub? ive had to scan ppl on the same day measure my bub at different dates that were over a week apart!.. go figure lol..

all scans have results.. did u ask her why it was measuring small???

I am pretty sure it is common, the person doing the u/s didn't do a very good job leaving you in the lurch like that, i would call them tomorrow to put your mind at ease. All the stress and worry isn't good for you or the baby.

I know it must be worrying. I think the u/s have a 1 wk margin of error aswell so that could be contributing to it. I had a scan this time at 9 wks and was told I was 3 days behind and then at 13 wks apparently I was 3 days ahead (I know my dates are right b/c I know when I ovulated). It is great that you saw a heartbeat, you wouldn't be able to see that at 5wks so hopefully it's just a baby that's smaller than the 'average' they use to work out how far along you are

My first scan at 5 weeks also said I was due a week later than what my LMP and DTD date was.

The chance of m/c is very slim when they pick up a heartbeat on ultrasound early too.

I am sure you have nothing to worry about Hope you get your answers soon!

If they got a heartbeat that means it was closer to 6 weeks than 5 - the heart starts beating at about 5w4d.
A few days is neither here nor there, early pregnancy scans have a margin of error of +/- 7 days.
A heartbeat is a very, very good sign...hang in there I'm sure everything is as it should be. Early pregnancy is such a head game if you've had miscarriages before or fertility treatment

I agree with what others have said. I knew when I ovulated and therefore my due date, but my Obgyn measured me a week earlier at 9 weeks (he said 8) but my dates ended up being closer to bubs birthday. A heart beat is the best sign too... that flutter is sooooo exciting!!!!

I just want to say congratulations on your pregnancy!

    Hi waiting1,

sorry you are having a bit of worrying time at the moment and I hope this week will fly by and you will get the best result next Tuesday. Its so hard not to worry but try to relax.

Apart from other girls already said, just wondering if you have a tilted uterus, as this could be hard for them to measure the bub and sometimes could be out a bit. Just a thought.

Will be thinking of you hun!

    update

Just to thank everyone for all the support in this thread and to let you know that had my scan today just on 7 weeks. everything is fine. Measuring perfectly for the dates and heartbeat 139 so nice and strong. So relieved !!!
The sonographer said the fetus is in tucked in a very hard spot to see and she suspects that this is why the fertility doctor thought it was a bit small.
I have been so anxious all week I have made myself sick so now just trying to enjoy this a bit more to reach the next milestone which is 12 weeks.
