FET, scans & ectopic pg

Hi guys,

I was wondering - how likely is an ectopic pg for a FET? I told the clinic today that I was heading overseas next week & the nurse got all huffy/cranky saying I absolutely had to have a scan to check the position before I "went off to a third-world country" (which at last check, Malaysia is not classified as third world by any classification).

I was just thinking - surely the FS would have some idea he was poking the embryo into my tubes when he did the transfer? Or do the emby's shuffle around?

Scan is the day before I leave, so fingers crossed.

Found my own reply:
During IVF treatment, a woman's eggs are removed directly from her ovaries and are fertilised with her partner's sperm outside her body (in a laboratory). The resulting embryos are then inserted directly into her womb. Given that most ectopic pregnancies occur when a fertilised egg gets stuck in the fallopian tube, you might ask how IVF could possibly increase the chances of ectopic pregnancy, since IVF "bypasses" the fallopian tubes altogether. Fertility specialists believe that ectopic pregnancy may occur if, when the embryos are transferred to the womb, they are placed too high in the womb cavity. The embryos then have a greater chance of "wandering" and implanting themselves in places where they are not supposed to be, such as the fallopian tubes. Embryos could also make their way into the fallopian tubes if they are injected into the womb with too much force. In the past, doctors would block the fallopian tubes during IVF treatment to try and prevent ectopic pregnancy from occurring. This method is no longer used.

i have personally had 2 x ectopics from fet so yes it sure can happen and believe this or not both in the same tube had the first one taken out along with my tube and the 2nd one grew on the stub of the tube that was already gone both my ectopics happend before 6 weeks

I have heard with IVF you are at greater chance of ectopic despite the fact that the emby is place directly into the uterus as it does tend to wander before finding a place to implant. You would think it would be the other way around.
As I am at a great risk of another ectopic (have one tube and it's damaged tube) I enquired about IVF to prevent another ectopic happening and they said it was no guarantee and the chances were just as great through IVF.
If you BHCG has being rising accordingly I would say your chance of ectopic is very low if no chance at all. With my ectopic my BHCG was 6000 at 8weeks which apparently was very high for an ectopic pregnancy. Not sure if thats true but thats what the consultation/surgeon told me. At 5weeks it was only 60.

oh good point emmy i would have totally forgot that hun ...about the bhcg so true if its riseing nicely then shouldnt be a problem mine were alway very low not getting much past the 100 mark BANG then just LOTS of pain

First HCG was 1200, but I was too flustered by the nurses response about going OS that I forgot to ask the levels!

You just never know...my hcg was checked every couple of days...the day my ectopic ruptured my hcg was 19000...no idications of ectopic at all...I was just very lucky I was at the clinic when it happened or I wouldn't be here...since that experience I have always had a scan at 6 weeks...the scariest experience of my life! You just can't be too careful! Good luck xxx

Thanks for the support & stories guys. I don't have any abdomen pain at all & not a scrap of spotting - this I count as plus, even though I know there's sometimes no pain or blood until the rupture.
