Pregnancy after Long Term TTC - January 2009

Kahlan - Seriously!!!! $190 bucks just for the DVD or is that for the 20 week scan and the DVD?

We paid $15 on top of whatever the scan was at that stage around the $200 mark. The 15 went to charity anyway. We got all of the 20 week scan and the sonographer flipped the machine to 3d for some parts at the start and end = so that was on the DVD too.

I doubt very much that you will get anywhere to do you a 3 or 4d before 20 weeks - apparently the bubs look very alien like due to no fat on the bones. They were reluctant to give me a 3d view at the 20 week scan - normally you'd get the 'cute' 3d around the 28 week mark. My friends freaked out when they saw my 3d pic's - I thought they were cute, but every one else was a bit weirded out cause bubs was so skinny.

Although there are no guarantees that you will be referred for a scan at that stage and my ultrasound place won't do them unless you have a referral (they used to do it at 28 - 35 weeks for people who had no referral, but were happy to pay the money for the pic's). After the 20 week scan there are no standard scans (like NT at 12 and the 20 week at 18 - 20 weeks).

I hear you and I totally think it is normal for you to feel angry/upset at her news. I know of people who gets pg and then complain that they don't want the baby, that it was an accident and that they wished they had taken better precaution and it would drive me insane. We get upset with those sorts of people because we, of all people, are more acutely conscious of the unfairness of the situation, that The Almight has decided to grant these people with such blessings but then creates so much hurdles for us! Good thing we are here and lets focus on the positive and that we would definitely appreciate our children a lot more. GL with your scan. Having my fingers crossed for you.

One question, I am having problems getting DVD recording of my ultrasound. All the places my doctor refers me to said they don't do it as standard but I can come back at 21 week pg and pay roughly $190 for the recording and 3D/4D images. Is this right? If you are in Victoria and have any info on which places to go, please help me out. Thanks.

Kahlan I go to East Melbourne Ultrasound and we don't pay any extra for DVD. I think it costs on average $220 (that is for everything), but is claimable on Medicare (when we were over our safety net we were only OOP about $25). I find them to be very good.

Possums - I don't think you sound irrational at all. It has always been a source of frustration to me watching other people not look after themselves and yet fall pregnant at the drop of a hat. I guess the really good thing that we have on our sides is that our babies will be happy and healthy because we have all taken exceptional care of ourselves (I haven't been this healthy since I was a child!). Unfortunately for this woman who is smoking she is running the risk of serious complications and ongoing health problems for her child (and I am an ex-smoker so I am not without sympathy for people trying to give up). I can understand you also wanting this time to be special for you. And it will be. People will be so happy for you when they find out.

Nixon - GL for appointment today and hooray for the dishwasher! My OB does one more scan at 34 weeks (I don't believe that it is standard) which checks for the health of the placenta and the growth of the baby... I believe they are standard in the UK, but only some OB's do them here.

Possum :hug: you are feeling completely normal.
It is very hard when people around you fall PG when you are not and equally as hard when you are PG someone and then find out that someone you know is due around the time when your little one is due and all the worst thoughts of loss come in your head.
All you can do is look after yourself and your growing bub and do everthing that supports a healthy pregnancy.

Kahlan, I was told the same as Nic that they really don't suggest a 3D/4D US until around 28 weeks and this is only done by referal. We eneded up paying the same $15 extra for the DVD as well.

AFM, hit 22 weeks today and finally felt June Bug last night from the outside about 5 times after a nice glass of cold water. Poor DH by the time we came to feel someone went a bit shy.

Thanks Janie and Nicole...it's so nice being able to turn to you ladies and vent this stuff...which I would feel embarassed confessing to someone else (except my DH and my mum!)

Nicole glad you felt June Bug from the outside...must have been a lovely experience

and thanks for making me feel normal...sometime I am even a bit overwhelmed by the varying attitudes of people, who have had such different experiences on the road to pregnancy, in my very large belly buddy group!

hi ladies thought i would pop in as i like this forum!

possums - i know what u mean! i was so jealous when my best friends mum was 42 and pregnant with her 7th child!!! the same time i was although she popped one out and i didnt! dont feel bad for that when i was TTC i would find myself feeling angry inside when i would see a pregnant woman with about 2 or 3 toddlers trailing behind her with no shoes on and greasy hair, its strange who nature choses to reproduce!

AFM- still feeling very ill! but sipping on icy poles now. I cant wait for someone here to pop! also thanks again for all the support and info, im doing shared care with GP and looking for a midwife as im a big supporter of them :) men midwives are the best ive been told! thats if i can make it to the GP without hurling!

hey everyone...just reporting in to say the Ob appt went well this arvo...went through all the formalities and he gave me forms for a 10wk scan as well as my 12wk scan and screening tests, and basically said he thinks all is on track so far and looking good. He didn't do much else, so it felt like a bit of a formality, but one which had to happen. Also I had to update my referral to him with my GP this morning and my blood pressure was great 116/59 so that was good! noone has weighed me or anything like that yet...I don't really know what checks are normal

possums - good news on the ob appointment. i hear you with other women falling pg by "accident" or not treating themselves well. I thought those feelings would go away once I fell pg, but I've also found they are still as strong and can still be upsetting. take care.

kahlan - my 12 week scan is booked at freemasons ultrasound east melb. dvd is about $19 extra?

afm, i had my ob appt today - similar to possums, a bit of a formality, but a stepping stone nevertheless. looking fwd to next tuesday's scan at 10.2 weeks. heading off home now and hoping i don't melt on the way in the 43 deg melbourne heat! ahh!

Possums - great news on the ob appt - hopefully formality means everything is ok which is just what we all want. And I completely understand your reaction to the pg news. Late last year a junior employee of a friend (who also cannot conceive due to a nasty jet ski accident) turned up on her doorstep saying she was pg, didn't want to keep the baby, and would they agree to take it from her after it was born! I was upset and sad and angry all at the same time. This person has been pg before apparently, to the same boyfriend, and terminated them. She ended up terminating the most recent one. I was heartbroken and so was my friend. I can only take heart that we will all be better and more loving parents because of our TTC journeys.

Mels -hope you didn't melt on the way home. And don't forget to stay well hydrated in this heat. Us pg ladies are especially vulnerable. Good luck for your scan on Tuesday - I am sure you'll be amazed at the changes since the last one - I was.

21 - glad to hear the icy poles are working! And glad that you have made a decision about the type of care you want. Hope that you and DF are in a better place soon.

Nic - how exciting to feel your little June Bug from the outside. Hopefully DH will get a chance soon.

TL - yay on your clever little girl turning - that's great news!

Kahlan - thanks for the information for us that are still less than 12 weeks. My logical brain had worked out something similar, but it is always nice to have a professional confirm it.

Nixon - hope your ob appt went well. And yay on the dishwasher... I just couldn't contemplate life without one so you seriously need some big reward for having coped for 2 years. Now what would be good.....? A foot rub or back rub maybe, especially for us budget conscious, or perhaps something a little more indulgent?

AFM - nothing much going on except have been feeling really cr@p the last two mornings, way more than usual, and now that I am back at work I am feeling it much more. It takes me until about 10am to get into the swing of things and not feel like I am going to throw up. Gosh I hope this nausea goes soon.

Anyway, time to put my feet up while DF cooks a yummy dinner for me.

I think that from 12 weeks the time does fly once the initial formalities have got on the way.

Chez, although I was never sick on days when I was feeling a bit green a piece of apple did the trick.
