Unhappy Worried about morphology scan...can someone help?

    Hey girls,
I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me because I am so stressed at the moment. I had my morphology scan yesterday expecting everything to be totally normal and be out of there within 20 mins. Over an hour later I started to get really worried. I asked the lady what was going on and she said she had difficulty finding a few things! They always make things sound do much worse than they are!!. She said it was ok and was probably the way the baby was lying. She eventually got another woman in and they located everything that was meant to be there apart from the left kidney. In the report there is a ? next to left kidney and said it appears to be small? but they were unsure.

However my biggest worry is that my 19 week old baby was getting a head diameter of a 17w4d baby. In the report they said that the whole circumference of the head was normal so there is probably no significance of the width of the head. I did check it against my other boys and there is a 0.6mm difference. They want me to be scanned again to double check everything.

So with that and finding out that im having my 3rd boy Im a bit of a mess!!!. I definitely didnt expect to feel this way and its really hard for me to accept. If anyone else has had those problems with a scan, it would be awesome to hear from you.

    When is your next scan?

and :hugs: I can understand how upset you are. I wish sonographers would explain things a little better.. or at least say something to put us at ease. Can you ring your Dr

3 boys are great by the way

    Hey mumma bear,

You poor thing, i know it is easy to say but try not to worry too much. Maybe you had a junior sonographer that was learning, so it took them alot longer to find everything? It is also true that it can be difficult to see certain orgains if the baby is lying in one position and wont move.

About the BPD, (Diameter of baby's head). The difference between 18w and 19w is about 42mm and 45mm +/-2mm. (According to ASUM, Aus society for US in med) with the variation of 2mm it could be well within the normal limits for your 19w baby to have an 18w-ish BPD.
Between 18w and 19w the BPD increases 3mm in one week, so a difference of 0.6mm is really insignificant. It doesnt sound like anything is too
So try not to worry too much as it sounds like it is fairly normal.

My girlfriend has a US at one hospital and they said her bubs kidneys were too big and weren't functionaing properly, and that he had a funny shaped head and a small chin. So her OB sent her in a panic to another US place that are the specialist in baby US, and it was all fine, 3 months later she gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby boy! He has a normal shaped head that it is a bit longer than the average, just like his dad!!! lol.

I hope i have been able to help a little bit, and you are not worrying too much.
I'm thinking of you, and have my fingers crossed for the next scan

Mummabear - hoping everything is as it should be & that your next scan proves this & puts your mind at ease. Bloody medical professionals, can't they just be human beings & be just a little aware of our feelings. Some people are in the wrong jobs. It is such a sensitive time for so many of us & you think they should know that. Will be thinking of you. PS: I am sure you will LOVE having 3 boys.

MummaBear, I am sure everything is good. When I had a morpho scan at week 13, the technician also took a long time (about an hour). Apparently, everything is fine (got my results last week)! The reason which took so long is because my bub was moving all the time! I saw him/her moving in the screen like every 5 seconds from facing us with head than back... you name it. So, please don't stress yourself out because an over active baby can sometimes make procedures longer than usual!

Take care and let us know the results! In the mean time, you are in my thoughts and prayers!

when my ob did a scan of my 2nd bubba, measuring all the head measurements - some were out by at least a week or so from my dates. some were showing a week behind, some a week ahead but the total circumference was normal. i was really worried too but everything was fine. i cant really help on the other questions but i hope the next scan is much less stressful for you. im sure everything will be a ok!

3 boys! how exciting. i have two boys and we have a third baby on the way. im sure its another boy.

    best wishes

    Hi there!!
Sorry to hear you had such a confusing experience. I know exsactly how you feel!!

At my 20w scan, bubs measured only 18w. I hadn't worried too much as I had read somewhere that any scans after 12w can be out by up to 2 weeks. The sonographer tole me when I asked about the sex of my bub, that it was too early to tell. I was disappointed.
She also mentioned that I needed to go back for another scan in 2 weeks time as she couldnt see my bubs heart properly.

It was a little weird, but I wasn't too concerned at the time. I went back for my 22w scan with bubs measureing 22w... exactly the right size for my EDD.

Bub's Heart was fine, although something completely different was discovered so I am now headed to Melbourne in the morning for further scans. It's not a big deal... but still scary.

Try not to be to stressed... I know thats so hard to do when you hear something may be 'possibly abnormal'. You will probably find that when you go back for your scan, bub's has grown. Mine had a growth spurt, and did 4 weeks of growing in 2 weeks!! lol

Good luck with your scan and if you ever need to chat, checkout my pins @ hotmail dot com.
