I think you should look into it ASAP and sign up as quickly as you practically can.
I enquired about, decided on, and booked into a CalmBirth class when I was around 14 weeks.
The hospital classes for me they send out info about them at 20 weeks and you sign up then.
The problem is that so many people are having babies at the moment, that the entire system can't quite cope with the load. So we signed up early for Calmbirth because we were told we might miss out on the teacher we wanted, and even by the time the hospital classes info came out they had already marked most of the ones in our possible timeframe (after 26 weeks, before baby arrives) as booked out, so we didn't have much choice of dates, and the dates we have been given are pretty inconvenient (but better than missing out), even though I sent the form back 2 days after we got it.
I have come to the conclusion that if you want to be able to choose a course/ob/hospital/anything else you have to book early at the moment, because the whole system is overloaded.
Actually I am pretty sure that this will apply to everything relating to these children: from the moment they are born there will be a few more of them than the system can handle at that time. So childcare, schools, etc - everything is going to be crowded for these kids.
Must have been much much worse in the post-WW2 baby boom, mind.
I guess it depends what kind of classes you are interested in. I'm not sure what kinds of types there are, but you could check out posts (and ask) on the "Private Childbirth Recommendation" board:
Me, I wanted to do a Calmbirth class, because I've heard good things about that and hypnobirth, which I gather is similar. But I also want to do the hospital classes so we know about the procedures and so on at our hospital. I figure that for us, the more we know the better.
