    UTI antibiotics

    Hi girls,

I am 16 weeks and I have a Strep B urinary tract infection. The doctor has prescribed Keflex, although i am allergic to penicillin. Although Keflex is not a penicillin its apparently closely related and i've never taken it before. So, i am just very worried! I would hate to take the Keflex and have a severe allergic reaction. I am sure it would not be good for the bub either! Has anyone else who is allergic to penicillin taken Keflex with no worries? Have you been given another antibiotic instead? I don't know what to do!

Keflex is a drug from the cephalosporin family of antibiotics. Which is a completely different family of drugs to penicillin antibiotics. People who are allergic to penicillin are given cephalosporins all the time (intravenously even) without any side effects.

If you have any doubts, check with your pharmacist (or even a couple if you are that worried) about it before you take them.

My Mum is allergic to penicillian and can take Keflex safely. Did you mention to your Dr about your concerns? Uti`s need to be treated asap if you have an infection as it can cause many problems.
