I'm 25 weeks tomorrow, and started producing, i guess you could call it breast milk, at around 20 weeks... but since it started, it's been clear, then yellow and now its thick, sticky, white and sometimes yellow (Sorry if TMI). I can make it come out in the shower, that's how i know what it looks like, it doesn't just come out by itself... yet.
Anyway i was wondering if this is colostrum or does it only come around/after birth? Can you run out of colostrum? Or does your body know when your baby has had enough and then the actual milk starts coming through?
Sorry i'm very clueless about breast milk stuff!! Thanks
I am the same - able to get some out in the shower but otherwise i'm 'dry' (which is a relief at this stage). Re - "Running Out" i dont think this is possible - i guess our bodies keep producing it until after birth when it realises that were no longer pregnant and the milk kicks in??
I have read colostrum is normal from about the 5th month onwards.
Keira - I started leaking thick yellow goo at around 15 weeks... i freaked out thinking it was an infection. Turns out it was colostrium! The doctor explained to me that all women start producing at a different time and it is quite normal, and that it is essential for the baby to get this colostrium because it cleans out their first black poo, is full of nutrition and they only need a teaspoon of it to make them feel full. Then soon after baby is born, whether it be hours or a few days, your milk will come in I found my bra's were sticking to my nipples and i'd have to peel them off, but found that making sure i've rubbed my Bio oil in morning and night has helped that problem, but sometimes i will still wake up with crust around my nipples.
Yep its colostrum ladies and you wont run out - your bodies will keep making it up until bub needs it! Some people find it leaks near their DD- I found I could express in the shower etc - out of curiosity!! and at times found it kind of dry and crusty in my bra near my DD, but I never leaked.
Good luck! Hth!
I didn't have any noticeable colostrum until after my babies were born. Then, once they put bubs on the breast straight after birth, that's what they will ingest until about day three when the 'milk' comes in. So your bodies won't run out of it...they will keep producing it until about day three after your gorgeous babies arrive!!
i have been leaking since i was about 12 weeks and now i am 24 i have to peel myself off of my bed sheets or bra etc several times a day. with no 1 i started to leak around 27 wks and put this time down to been so early on as i was not completely dry from 1st time around although no longer BF my DD i could still get milk out in the shower! its nothing to worry about and you wont run out.
