    Glucose tolerance Test - Help!

    Hi Guys
I'm 26 weeks pg, had my routine urine test at the OB today and it came back with a raised glucose amount. I have no history of Diabetes in my family. I am being sent for a Glucose Tolerance Test and IM SCARED!!
How many of you have had glucose in your urine but had the test and all was ok???
OR does this mean I have Gestational Diabetes!!
Every other urine test ive had has been normal but not this one - is this just a once off thing? any info would be great

    Hi Reggie

I had glucose in my urine and the pathologist freaked out and in turn freaked me out. Then he screwed me around for about a week umming and ahhing until I got sick of it, asked my OB what the go was and she told me it is perfectly normal to have glucose spill into your urine while pg. Not so cool if you are not pg. For the record a week after the initial test I did it again and there was no glucose and everything was fine, no GD.. Good luck It may just be inexperienced staff or they are just covering all bases for the health of you and bub x

On the day of the urine test I hadn't eat enough, I had white bread and soft drink for lunch and then went and had my series of tests. Went for the 2 hr GTT and everything was fine.

that it is something like this for you too....

    Hi Reggie,

Up front I have to say I've never done a urine test for my Ob, but I've been through the GD tests both pregnancies. I can only advise you not to worry yourself too much at this stage - I assume you'll do the glucose test in the next few weeks to be certain?

With DS I ended up with gestational diabetes - the only person in my immediate family to have it was my nan, who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes aged 86!! I did the one-hour glucose test which came back with a high reading, as did the two-hour test. GD doesn't necessarily mean insulin ... mine was diet controlled, albeit with regular finger ***** tests to monitor my blood sugar level. GD didn't interfere with my pregnancy and I was healthy as a horse. Bub was born only 2.9kg and the GD disappeared.

This pg, I went straight to the two-hour glucose test which involved three blood tests - the fasting test (before the glucose drink), a test one-hour post drink and the third at the two-hour mark. It showed my levels were "over" at one hour, but at the two-hour mark they'd dropped right back ... which means I don't have GD this pg.

And hard as it may be not to worry in the meantime, I can only encourage you not to until you do the GD test. While this pg it's obivously great not to have GD, it really wasn't too bad first time round.

Thanks guys.. but not looking so good

Andie - i did my 1 hour test last fri and i failed it
also came back my hemoglobin levels only 106 which basically not good - no wonder i am freakin TIRED!
and to top that off some woman decided to run into my car as i was comming outta docs - wonderful day i had!

I have to do the tree hour test this fri so yeah im not happy about it, just a gut feeling that everything not so good you know?
It's horrible as I have no history in family, def not overweight - if anything was a bit under and whamo! I get this. I'm 27 weeks now surely changing diet etc would take too long to work? hopefully they can just chuck me on some meds or something...

Reggie, I failed the 1 hour but passed the 3hour one with my first pregnancy.

Even if you do have GD it can usually be managed quite easily with diet and it doesn't take long to make a difference.
