I am 20 weeks pregnant and have been soooo thirsty lately. It seems that it does not matter how much I drink I still feel like I have had nothing to drink at all. This is on going both day and night for about a week now.
Hi there, i have been VERY thirsty most of my pregnancy. Sometimes i can't drink enough. It comes and goes and was worst in the second tri. (Pre preg i could go a whole day without a glass of water and 2nd tri i was drinking upto 3L a day, have curbed the water at the mo b/c i need to wee every hour or so! LOL)
Excess thirst can be a symptom of diabetes, but the general concensus with my preggo friends was that you get very thirsty when preg. I have also heard it gets worse when breastfeeding, SUPER THIRSTY!
My mother a DIV1 tells me it's very normal, and only gets worse during breast feeding like angeA said! So just make sure your drinking when ever you feel the need. It's nothing for me to drink 600ml bottel of water during the night - and you know what my skin has never looked better!
Hi
I had gestational diabetes, I was VERY thirsty and also tired!! It could be just that you are not having enough fluid in, but make sure to mention it to your care provider. Good luck!! I am sure you are fine
in the 2nd trimester your beautiful body is increasing its blood volume...so you get thirsty to increase your fluid intake to boost your circulating blood volume
your blood volume increases slightly in 1st trimester, and mostly in the 2nd trimester...with a 50% rise in plasma volume and 20% rise in red cell volume
Me too! Definately much more thirsty. "Popped out" in the last 2 weeks and obviously pregnant now. Also no longer sleeping through the night - have to pop up for a wee during the night. Lots of fun though.
thanks to all of you for easing my worried, pregnant brain. I will mention it to my midwife at my next appoitment, but appreciate all of your responses. This website is the best ever!!!
Hi, Don't mean to worry you as it is likely nothing.
But I have a very close friend who was super thirsty while pregnant. 4 l a day ish. Four a month at nine months she complained to three Dr. They did nothing it turns out she had "Help syndrome" Very serious. So I'd get my midwife to look into that. (help syndrome is not common 1 in 1000 ish)
My second trimester also brought me constant thirst. Although thirst can be one of the signs of Gestational diabetes, it does not necessary mean that you have it. It's best to check it out though. I still feel thirsty all the time!
WOW I am feeling so thirsty today too. I did with both my other pregnancies and was tested both times and didn't have Gestational Diabetes.
Sometimes I feel like....hope people know this scene from 'Look who's talking'....where Kirsty Ally is drinking a whole container of juice in front of the open fridge with the baby inside her tugging on the cord wanting more LOL Gosh I really feel like watching that movie now HAHA
Thanks Yogababy for letting us know its also the increase of blood volume....makes me feel a bit better.
Thanks for all if your advice. Seeing my midwive tomorrow so will mention it. Hopefully it is nothing, but it is always nice to get these things sorted out if there is a problem.
I'm constantly thirsty I regulate my own intake of fluid or I will just keep drinking and drinking. I don't have GD or any type of diabetes (get tested regularly as we have both in the family). I'm similar but not as bad with food as well my body just doesn't seem to know when it's full and saturated
