    long haul flight

    Hey there

I've just booked a last minute flight to go back to the UK to see my mum for a week or so in 10 days time - does anyone have any tips for anything to make the long haul flight a bit more comfortable (other than an upgrade to business class of course!!)

    Thanks!

    Hi Georgina

We did that long haul flight on Monday and am now in UK visiting. I also did the journey when i was 4 1/2 months preggy with Oscar. When preggy and flying I just made sure i wore really loose clothing as couldn't stand anything on my belly and we also got bulkhead seats so that i could have my bag in front of me (after take off) and put my feet up on it. My ankles still swelled abit but other than that all was well. have a great time.

Oh yeh - business class would just about do it eh?

I did several long flights in my last trimesters of three pregnancies. It's not really too much different to being non-pregnant - still looooooong and uncomfy. (And - there is something worse: travelling with a 12 - 36 month old on a long haul flight ..... close second to that is sitting next to a mother with a 12-36 month old on a long haul flight ....)

Here's a few tips from the travel weary:
    * buy a big bottle of water before you board
    * drink heaps, to avoid dehydration, and that will make you get up to the loo heaps, and walk a lot - up and down the aisles
    * do those in-flight exercises from time to time
    * take your own pillow & try for some sleep
    * a can of aerosol Evian - lovely to spray on your face in flight (little touch of luxury)
    * undo your shoes and pull on fluffy socks
    * try & snag a couple of seats together (pretty rare thse days) if possible so you can put your feet up sometimes
    * invest in some good reading material - great time to catch up on your birth reading.

My best flight ever: I waddled on board with my big bump carrying an inflatable ring. (reeeeellllly bad haemorrhoids!) The Qantas air crew took one look at me, said, "OH you poor thing!" and organized three seats in a row for me and I slept on my side all the way there ..... such bliss!

So ..... you could always board with a ring tucked under one arm ....

thanks for all those - I'm definitely going to need more pillows and all that and I might even invest in an inflatable ring!!

    Hi Georgina,

Ever thought of checking in early, wear something a bit special (but loose) and asking if there is any chance of an upgrade. My Husband and I did this when we flew home to see his family in the UK a few years ago and we were upgraded from Syd to LA, then LA to NY, NY to Canada, back in economy from Canda to the UK, back up to business UK to Hong Kong and then back in Economy HK to Syd.

It's always worth a try, they can only say no! But keep in mind you need to check in nice and early and be dressed "appropriately".

Good luck with your trip, I hope it's not too awful. If they can't upgrade you ask for an isle seat near the front.

    Georgina,
I've an 8 hour flight coming up at 19 weeks, and I've been advised to drink lots of water and get DVT socks. They are very important and try to walk around as much as you can.
Hope you have an uneventful flight! I hate flights to Europe even during normal days!!

god love those DVT socks - just remembered as well that you can't go in the exit row seats when you're pregnant either - gee being a pregnant flyer sucks - although I can't moan too much as I have managed to secure upgrades for the singapore sydney legs just not the london ones!
