Today I had my booking in appointment at new hospital (we have decided to change) Baby is measuring 2 weeks ahead on dates and my blood pressure was only 80/50. I suppose I am not going to have a problem with pre eclampsia but can a really low BP cause any problems to the baby of myself?
Hi Clare,
My BP was really low a few weeks ago (80/50) and then went down at my 24 week visit to 70/40, I was told not to worry about it as that can happen in the middle of pregnancy and then come up again- there is no risk to you or the baby as long as you are feeling ok ( not dizzy etc ) and drinking enough. Mine has come back up now at 25 weeks to 90/60.
Hope that helps!
Hi Clare
One reason your BP is low is because your veins and arteries are getting bigger to cope with the extra blood your body makes during pregnancy. By week 38 you can have as much as 70% more blood volume. So what is happening to you is that your blood vessels are getting bigger but your body has not made enough blood to fill them all. The only problem this will cause is that you may feel dizzy if you stand quickly. It will not harm your baby
Thankyou for the info. I haven't felt dizzy or anything like that. My ob seemed to be more concerned with my iron levels? Does this play a part in the low BP? I have always had a BP on the lower side (100/60) and have a history of hypothyroidism and anaemia. I did a search and found an article that said the 3 can be related but I never know what to believe when found on the net.
I dont think iron levels have much to do with your BP. But if you suffer from anaemia then it should be investigated. There are a number of causes and most of them can be treated.
